For those who are not sports fans, football facts are important to know before the Super Bowl, aka the most-watched game in America! I’m not saying you have to know completely in-depth how the rules of the sport work. All you (if you don’t follow the NFL or sports) need to do prior to Super LIV (which is on February 2nd, 2020) is research and/or be aware of a few basic facts regarding the Super Bowl.
Knowing these basic facts will help you not embarrass yourself in front of your friends as you all are watching The Big Game! With that being said, here are 10 Football Facts You Should Learn Before Super Bowl LIV So You Don’t Look Like A Complete Idiot At This Year’s Party:
One of the most general football facts to know before Super Bowl LIV is when the First Super Bowl was. Super Bowl I took place on January 15th, 1967 at The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, California. Another one of the most general football facts to know within this fact is that The Green Bay Packers beat The Kansas City Chiefs 35-10 in Super Bowl I.
For those who don’t follow football or sports in general, one of the things said people will ask during the game is which team(s) have won the most Super Bowl Titles. This is one of the easiest football facts related to the Super Bowl that one should know regardless if you are a fan of the sport or not.
Two teams share the record for the most Super Bowl Championships: The Pittsburgh Steeler and The New England Patriots have won The Big Game six times each.
Besides sharing the record with The Steelers for the most Super Bowl Wins, The Patriots are also one of two teams with the most Super Bowl Losses. The Patriots, along with The San Francisco 49ers (who have won the Super Bowl five times), have lost The Big Game five times each.
At the end of each Super Bowl, the winning team is presented with The Vince Lombardi Trophy. One of the most important football facts to know before Super Bowl LIV is who Vince Lombardi, the man whom the Super Bowl Trophy is named after is.
Lombardi was the head coach of The Green Bay Packers during the 1960s and he led the team to victories in the first two Super Bowl Games. Three years after winning Super Bowl II, the legendary coach suddenly passed away from cancer at the age of 57 on September 3rd, 1970.
In honor of Lombardi’s legacy, The NFL Super Bowl Trophy was renamed as The Vince Lombardi Trophy and was presented for the first time under its new name in Super Bowl V when The Baltimore Colts defeated The Dallas Cowboys 16-13.
Of all the football facts related to the Super Bowl to make this list, #5 is the most interesting! The reason is due to the shocking fact that no NFL team has ever played in or won The Super Bowl at their home stadium!
The closest any NFL Team has come to reaching this feat was The Minnesota Vikings. Super Bowl LII was held U.S. Bank Stadium (The Vikings’ home stadium) and the Vikings reached The NFC Championship Game, which they lost 38-7 to The Philadelphia Eagles, who would go on to win Super LII.
Another one of the most common football facts that non-sports fans will ask is which player has the most Super Bowl titles. Quarterback Tom Brady (who’s still an active NFL Player) is the NFL Player with the most Super Bowl wins with six.
Brady won all six with The New England Patriots, the team he’s played with for his entire NFL career. By winning Super Bowl LIV with The Patriots this past February, Brady became the sole person to hold the record. Prior to Super Bowl LIV, Brady had tied and shared the record with former NFL Linebacker Charles Haley, who won five Super Bowls: two with The San Francisco 49ers and three with The Dallas Cowboys.
The Miami Dolphins’ 14-7 win over The Washington Redskins in Super Bowl VII made them the first and so far only team to complete a perfect undefeated season. Following their Super Bowl VII win, The Dolphins finished the 1972 NFL Season 17-0-0 (The Dolphins won all 14 of their regular-season games and all 3 of their postseason games).
Given the two football facts about The Super Bowl that no NFL Team has yet to play the Super Bowl at their home stadium yet and the location for each Super Bowl is determined years in advance, the two competing teams are away teams. Despite this, one team still has to assigned as the designated “Home” Team and the other as the designated “Away” Team.
The “designated” home team alternates between the NFC team in odd-numbered Super Bowls and the AFC team in even-number Super Bowls.
The thing that makes #9 stand out from the other football facts on this list is that this one has familial ties: one pair of brothers have faced each other in The Super Bowl as head coaches! This historic feat happened in Super Bowl XLVII, which was held in 2013.
The two teams playing for The Super Bowl that year were the San Francisco 49ers and The Baltimore Ravens, whose head coaches were Jim Harbaugh and John Harbaugh respectively. John’s Ravens ended up beating his younger brother’s 49ers 34-31.
For those of you who don’t follow the sport, another one of several football facts about The Super Bowl that non-football fans will ask and/or wonder about is what the highest and lowest amounts of points scored from both teams combined is.
From the 53 Super Bowls played so far, the highest number of points scored was Super Bowl XXIX, where a total of 75 points combined from both teams (The San Fransisco 49ers and The San Diego Chargers) was scored. The 49ers ended up winning the game 49-26.
Meanwhile, the most recent Super Bowl, Super Bowl LIV, holds the record for the lowest amount of points scored from both teams combined: 16. The New England Patriots beat The Los Angeles Rams 13-3. With that scoreline, The New England Patriots also hold the record for the lowest amount of points scored in a Super Bowl by the winning team.
