10 Female Fronted Rock Bands You'll Want To Stream Today

To say that these female fronted rock bands are fantastic is an understatement. The rock genre is getting more diverse every day but despite improvements there are still many bands that are ignored, especially ones with women as lead singers.

Below is a list of bands you definitely need to stream and support.

1. Starcrawler

Based out of Los Angeles Starcrawler is a punk rock band formed in 2015 when lead singer Arrow de Wilde was just 16. A DIY band Starcrawler thrives on the nostalgia of the 70s with the ferocity of modern day punk. Wilde’s voice reminds you of rock legends such as Courtney Love and Iggy Pop. They recently paid homage to punk gods The Ramones by covering their iconic song “Pet Sematary” for the 2019 Stephen King adaptation.

2. PVRIS

A synth-infused rock group PVRIS is a band with significant staying power. Currently with two albums out this band has opened for the likes of alternative heavy hitters such as Fall Out Boy and Mayday Parade. Lead singer Lynn Gunn has a haunting voice with just the right amount of grit. On a tweet in October 2018 Gunn revealed the band is currently working on new material.

3. Deap Vally

Formed in Los Angeles this rock duo is made up of Lindsey Troy and Julie Edwards. Their sound is authentically rock, echoing the roughness of female rock singers from the 1960s and 1970s. Although they haven’t released new music recently they have toured within the last few years. One being Blondie, a band that opened the doors for many women in the punk/post-punk scene.

4. The Regrettes

This incredibly youthful band is led by eighteen-year-old Lydia Night. The Regrettes have songs like “Seashore” and “Pumpkin” that recall the day of riot grrrl music. Their lyrics are incredibly tongue in cheek and will have you dancing around your room with the slight urge to fight the patriarchy. They are currently on tour with fellow punk bands SWMRS.

5. Eyes Set To Kill

Named after a poem lead singer Alexia Rodriguez wrote this post-hardcore band was created by sisters Alexia and Anissa Rodriguez, the latter recently departing the band. What’s special about this band is that they are fronted by a Latina. Rock, especially metal, music is predominantly made up of white men. There are few women and even fewer women in color. Eyes Set To Kill has helped inspire inclusivity in their genre. With six albums under their belt this band shows no signs of slowing down.

6. Haim

Haim is made up of sisters Este Haim, Danielle Haim, and Alana Haim. They have not only just been compared to Fleetwood Mac, they have actually had the opportunity to sit down the White Witch herself Stevie Nicks. This sister act has a smooth, subtle flow to their sound. “If I Could Change Your Mind”, a personal favorite, shows that they are also strong lyrically.

7. The Aces

This all female group consists of Katie Henderson, McKenna Petty, Alisa Ramierez and Cristal Ramirez. Hailing from Utah The Aces brings a breath of fresh air to the indie genre. Their music has a light, airy vibe to it that feels more pop than rock but their lyrics cement them as a strong alternative rock group.

8. New Years Day

Another heavier hard rock band is New Years Day fronted by Ash Costello. Helping to further women in Metal, Costello has consistently uplifted other women in the genre. In 2018 they went on tour with fellow female fronted band In This Moment on the “Witching Hour Tour”. Their new album Unbreakable is slated to drop some time this year.

9. Pale Waves

If you’ve been craving a modern-day female fronted band similar to The Cure, Pale Waves is the answer to that craving. Formed in Manchester, England this band has been referred to as indie, pop and goth pop, the last one probably fitting them the best. Their debut album was dropped in September of 2018 and I am eager to see what else this band has up their sleeve.

10. Sunflower Bean

Sunflower Bean’s music is very similar to a dream. Based out of Glen Head, New York this band has been going strong since 2013. Despite being a fairly new band their sound is similar to Jefferson Airplane and early Heart. They released their third album King of the Dudes in January.
