The world of fashion is chock full of filtering trends─some stick around for years, others are on their way out within a few short months of their arrival. The months comprising 2018 welcomed ’80s-inspired fanny packs and PVC everything (trench coats and totes alike), and 2019 fixed our sartorial awareness toward biker shorts and tiny statement sunglasses.
Trends have effectively made their marks this year, even among livestreamed runways and strictly virtual collection launches. While fashion trends typically pose controversy and opposition between the embracers and the critics, there’s one closet garb that has seemingly made its way into every individual’s closet without argument this year: the mask. Unlike previous years, the mask will go down in the history books (of fashion, of course) as the garb that single-handedly styled 2020.
Most of the time, we’re quite thrilled to see those short-lasting ones on their way out─remember the chunky sneaker craze? Us too. We have a feeling we’ll feel the same way once the mask fades into the abyss of outdated fashion. Nonetheless, the mask has effectively made its mark, just as chartreuse and statement leather pieces have. While they’re not the most flattering garbs we’ve flaunted, we’ve somehow found ways to style them with ease. So, in light of making the most of an unfortunate styling predicament, here are a few of our favorite mask outfits we’ve seen thus far. Trust us, you’re going to want to copy and paste these onto yourself.
Fashion writer, Instagram influencer, and feed aesthetic enthusiast Stephanie Broek has officially knocked our (and hers, apparently) socks off with this mask-adorned fit. The Ganni two tone neutral trench perfectly lays atop her oversized white button-down, Filippa K flowy pleated trousers and boyfriend-fitted black blazer. The beige rope-fringed flap bag makes a statement while the Birkenstock leather sandals humble the look. The only accessory making a bigger statement than the Chanel crossbody is, of course, the mask. Chic, simple, casual and effortless─do mask outfits get any better?

New York City socialite and fashion maven Olivia Palermo was seen effortlessly boasting the most city chic mask look we’ve seen yet: a long moss green bomber with banded cuffs over a Chinti and Parker yellow-brown cashmere cardigan and a butter-colored maxi. She completed the look with her Alexandre Birman white sneaks─shoes only an NYC elite would use to walk her quilted-vest-dressed-Maltese.

Blogger, designer, Italian entrepreneur and Milan native Chiara Ferragni decided to rock a neon sweatsuit and mask while she volunteered for a local organization, Milano Auita, to bag and deliver groceries to families in need. Her bright orange Pangaia track suit was paired perfectly with her nylon Prada crossbody, all white sneaks and neutral U-Mask face mask. This mask outfit gives the “beauty is pain” phrase a run for its money, as proved by the comfortably polished set pictured below.

Arielle Charnas has effortlessly paired two of 2020’s most influential trends─tie dyed clothing and, of course, the face mask─into a single outfit, and we’re loving it. Similar to Ferragni, Charnas was photographed in her mask-adorned outfit while volunteering for City Harvest, a NYC-based nonprofit that serves as the city’s largest food rescue organization. Her outfit comprised a tie-dyed STYLEBYGG sweater, M.PATMOS face mask, 3×1 blue jeans with a gathered cuff, and a pair of Veja sneaks. Simple never looked so good, especially for mask outfits.

Influencer, designer and entrepreneurial badass Danielle Bernstein decided to take her mask to the stables. Bernstein, who has spent a large part of her summer in Amagansett, flaunted a Chanel beige body suit, black riding pants, and a black face mask to follow suit. In order to tailor this outfit to the majority of us─AKA those who can’t drop $1,000 on a Chanel bodysuit─we linked something similar down below.

Influencer, podcast host and Parisienne fashion icon Camille Charrière took her face covering to a whole new level. Charrière styled perhaps one of the most elegant mask outfits we’ve seen thus far: a white denim fringed set with a pair of Christopher Esber black strappy heels. Our favorite part, though, is the “mask.” Fashioned like a bandana, Charrière’s Hermès silk orange-toned scarf is the perfect touch to this already to-die-for ensemble.

The perfect mask outfits don’t always have to include a Hermès scarf or a Prada tote. In fact, this outfit, which was so effortlessly styled by Instagram influencer and fitness enthusiast Veronica Ferraro, is probably one of the most versatile on this list. Ferraro rocked a white cropped tee, straight-leg light wash jeans, and green and white Nike kicks. She polished off her casual, errand-running look with an ecru Christian Dior flap bag and a U-Mask face mask.

If anyone knows how to style mask outfits, it’s Olivia Culpo. The television personality and fashion influencer just added new feats to her resume: mask designer and business owner. Founder of MORE THAN A MASK, Culpo designed a collection of fashion-forward masks that can be paired with any outfit you could throw together─from athleisure to cocktail hour. For every mask sold, MORE THAN A MASK will donate $10 to Feeding America in an effort to relieve those affected by COVID-19. The masks can be purchased online or in any Express store. Here, Culpo paired the collection’s camo face mask with her army green Good American sports bra and biker short set. Whether we’re going to the gym or dressing up to run some errands, we’re all about this look. We’ve linked a similar Good American set below.

Vanessa Hudgens was spotted sporting a bright pink and purple flowy romper by Camilla while on her way to grab some takeout. She accessorized with a pair of Gucci sandals, dainty jewelry, a black Poppy Lissiman waistbag sitting pretty on her shoulder, and a 2Pac “Keep Ya Head Up” face mask. The only thing we love more than her summery ensemble is the motto touted on her face covering. Yep, we’re going to be recreating this look ASAP.

Victoria’s Secret Angel and world-renowned model Elsa Hosk might just have the whole mask thing down to a science, as proven by the last look on this list. She paired her face mask with a pair of red paisley Etro jeans and a white cropped puff sleeve top. For accessories, Hosk flaunted a beige nylon Prada mini bag and a classic pair of white sneaks. So, what have we learned? A white top and statement pants could make any mask look good.
