Fashion Trends From the 20’s To The 90’s That Are Back In Style

Fashion trends rise and fall year after year so it’s no surprise that every trend can be traced back to a different time. We know about the fringe of the 1920s and the bell bottoms of the 1970s, but what fashion trends from each decade are making there way onto the scene in 2019. Here are fashion trends from the 20s to the 90s that are back in style.

The 1920s – Fringe

The 1920s was the premiere of fringe styles and showed the utmost glitziness. It is more subtle than the other popular styles, sequins and feathers, so it became a staple that continued to rise and fall throughout history. For the 2019 seasons, you will see a rise in fringe garments, whether it be the hems of skirts or an entire jacket.

The 1930s – Accordion Pleated Skirt

The pleats in the 1930s came from the knife pleats of the 1920s. This trend began by women copying the skirts of school girls. When the hems shortened to below the knee, the pleats stuck. For 2019, midi length accordion pleats will be super trendy.

The 1940s – Women’s Suits

Victory suits and utility suits were popular in the 1940s but were typically worn with skirts. You could mix and match the jacket and skirt with different blouses to create multiple outfits. This trend was the modern version of business casual, a trend that will be prevalent in 2019.

The 1950s – High-Waisted Ankle Pants

The 1950s version of this pant was called the cigarette pant and featured a high-waist, full hips, and skinny fit through the leg. The plaid print and the cuffed hem are also taken from 1950s fashion and are perfectly pinup.

The 1960s – Headbands

Scarves and neckerchiefs worn as headbands were extremely popular in the 1960s. These headbands were worn as a compliment to the beehive hairstyle, which is thankfully not coming back in style. It was also worn by working-class women to keep their hair protected from industrial smog.

The 1970s – Bell Bottoms

Everyone knows about the 1970s and bell bottom jeans, but no one knows the trend actual rose from the uniforms of Navy Sailors. Many celebrities were important in the spread of this trend such as Cher and Sonny. They were typically made from denim but can be found in modern stores in kinds of cotton and knits as well. The bell bottom became a standard in 1970s fashion and they are becoming the standard for 2019 as well.

The 1980s – Bold Shoulders

During the 1980s there was a resurface of 1940s trends, including the bold shoulder. The shoulder pad helped to define the silhouette and extend the shoulder line. The look was masculine but was used in women’s overcoats and blazers. Women who wore this trend were often seeking success in the corporate world. These pads became the defining trend of the 1980s and were known as power dressing. While we aren’t shooting for that in 2019, shoulder pads will be making a small comeback.

The 1990s – Bike Shorts

You can thank Kim Kardashian for this one! In the 1990s, bike shorts were all the rage. We had moved on from them until Kim K decided to step out in her ensemble. Now you can find bike shorts in any color in any store. They have re-emerged on the fashion scene during various fashion weeks and are a popular choice among celebrities and bloggers. While they are comfy, these shorts definitely do not flatter everyone.
