What To Expect If You Get Caught Drinking Freshman Year
1. If you get caught drinking in the dorms by your RA…
While this depends on how strict your RA is (some will “look the other way” this time and leave you with a harsh warning), if they decide to write you up – not good. You will likely have to take an alcohol responsibility class that costs a good $100 or so. This mark will show up on your permanent school record as well – so basically it’s stuck with you for life.
2. If you get caught drinking (or with possession of alcohol) by the police…
This could go one of a few ways. If the cop is in a good mood, they will likely dump out the bottle and escort you home. Now, this would be the best case scenario because remember, what you are doing is ILLEGAL. If the cop is feeling a little less lenient, they will give you a ticket and court date – not cheap and not fun. But if the cop is really not having a good day (or you’re just that drunk) they could put you in the drunk tank and post bail, also with a court date. Either way, this is probably going on your permanent record…AKA visible to future employers.
3. If you get caught trying to have someone else buy alcohol for you outside a liquor store…
This is a tricky one. You’re not only putting yourself at risk, but you’re also putting someone else at risk. If they get caught handing off the alcohol to you, they will more than likely get arrested…and the fact that someone else is in jail because of you will be forever weighing on your shoulders. Of course, it would be their decision to buy the alcohol for you, so in the end they only have themselves to blame – but why even put either of you in that position to begin with? Plus, you’ll be faced with a HUGE fine.

4. If you get caught drinking with a fake ID…
Again, each circumstance is different, but a few things can happen. If it’s a shop owner or door man who spots your bluff, they could either just turn you down…or decide to hand off your ID to the police. Once the police interfere, you could potentially be arrested and charged with a misdemeanor, or even a full-on felony in some states. Best advice for this one? Accept FOMO and wait till you turn 21.
5. If you get caught drinking freshman year at all…
Everyone will know and let me tell you – that is a huge downer. Seriously, you won’t be able to live it down. Aside from the laughter, you will have fines, court dates, marks on your record…and possibly even jail time – it’s just not worth it. But if you are going to drink, do so in a safe environment…just be sure you know the consequences if you get caught.
Live your life to the fullest but don’t make stupid decisions that will haunt you. The apartment complex I live at currently kicks out people with any sort of police record. Just one arrest could get you booted out of your apartment, scuff up your beautiful school record, and ultimately hinder your chances at getting a job. Not worth it if you ask me.
