When it comes to the makeup world, it can be easy to get lost in a variety of different approaches to applying your products. Everyone has their preferences, but certain tips can go a long way when it comes to putting your makeup on. Check out these 12 essential makeup tips that may help you take your look to the next level!
There are many different methods when it comes to applying concealer. A popular method includes creating a triangle under your eyes to highlight them and blending the concealer that way. However, if you’re looking to create a lifting effect, consider creating a stroke from the top of your cheek up to the outer corner of your eye! From here, blend your concealer outwards and up to give you a natural-looking face-lift. Additionally, you can create parallel lines next to your nostril and lip to give your face even more of a lifted look!
This may be one of the oldest makeup tips in the book, but in case you haven’t heard it yet, I’m here to enlighten you! You should always, always, always wet your beauty blender before applying your wet products. Using a dry beauty blender with products such as foundation will cause the beauty blender to absorb the product, essentially wasting your makeup! When you wet your beauty blender first, the sponge will expand which will result in less makeup absorption. Along with this, wetting your beauty blender is more hygienic in general, because you won’t be using the old leftover products that would have been absorbed if it were dry.
Waterproof products, such as waterproof mascara, can be super convenient when it comes to makeup. As our eyes water throughout the day and we sweat, we’re gonna want something that will prevent our makeup from running. However, you shouldn’t use waterproof products too often. This is because they are a lot more difficult to completely wipe off at the end of the day, creating a build-up of bacteria in your lashes and on your eyelids. However, should you choose to use waterproof products, try washing them off with an oil. Oil will get the product off a lot easier and result in less leftover makeup.
Your eyebrows will either make or break your face. It can be tempting to expand the lines of your brows, but really, where should your eyebrows end? A great trick to figure this out is to take some sort of pencil and place it at the outer side of your nose, lining it up with the outer corner of your eye. Where the pencil ends is typically where your eyebrow should end!
When applying eyeshadow, contour, or anything that requires a brush, try not to grip your brushes. Instead, hold them delicately, as if you are holding a paintbrush. Doing this will allow you to blend the product in a smoother manner. If you’re gripping your products, you’re likely to keep them concentrated in one place. Additionally, if you want more of a pigmented look, hold your brushes towards the top. To create more of a blended motion, hold them towards the very end.
While people may generally suggest contouring under the cheekbone to highlight them, consider contouring just above the cheekbone instead! Doing this will create more of a lifted look and define your cheeks. You can add your highlight and blush just above the contour to make your face look even more defined. Sweep your contour upwards, just into your hairline, to make the face shape more definite.
Using a spoolie on your eyebrows is good for helping you to guide your eyebrow pencil in all the right places, but try using an eyebrow gel to do this instead. You could use the gel as a guide before you apply your products, or you could use it afterwards. Using a gel will set your eyebrows in place for the remainder of the day so that you won’t have to worry about the hairs moving around. This is also a great way to keep your brows looking natural – even if they’re filled in!
Unless you’re an absolute pro at eyeliner with a steady hand, using tape for your eyeliner is a great way to keep the line straight! If you’re going for a winged look and you’re a beginner, you’ll definitely want to try this trick. Just take a piece of tape and line it up from the outer corner of your eye to your hairline. You can then use your eyeliner to create the winged look you desire without having to worry about any mess-ups! The tape will allow your liner to retain a clean, straight line. This is a good way to start practicing so that you can eventually free-hand your liner.
If you’re wondering why your eyeshadow isn’t popping with color when you put it on, it could be because you aren’t priming and/or concealing your eyes beforehand. Using a primer, concealer, or both, will give your eyes a clean base to work with. However, if you’re using concealer on your eyes, make sure you set it in place with powder before applying your eyeshadow! If you don’t do this, your eyeshadow will probably crease, and we definitely don’t want that. Get that strong, pigmented look by prepping your eyes.
Blending contour can be tricky, but doing it the right way will have your makeup looking flawless. When it comes to your forehead and cheeks, you always want to blend your contour upwards. When you apply contour to your forehead, blend the contour up towards your hairline. When applying it to your cheeks, do the same thing – blend the contour upwards, not downwards. When it comes to contouring your jawline, however, you’ll want to blend downwards. Doing so will emphasize your jawline, causing it to look sharper than it may naturally look. When contouring your nose, you should blend upwards with the brush, then powder the sides and use a beauty blender to get rid of extra darkness.
When applying eyeliner, it’s never a bad idea to apply it underneath your lashes, right where your waterline is. Doing this will darken the eyes and cause them to stand out. You can apply this trick to your bottom waterline as well by using your finger to pull the skin down and applying it underneath your eye. This will also cause your eyes to appear bigger than they are, so if your eyes are on the smaller side, give this a try!
This trick has saved me the mess of reapplying my lipstick throughout the day, and I’m here to share it with you! If your lipstick doesn’t stick to your lips very well, you can set it with powder. To do this, start by blotting your lipstick with a tissue to get the excess off. Take a thin tissue, put it over your lips, and place the powder on top of the tissue. When you do this, the powder will get rid of the extra moisture that will cause your lipstick to slide around throughout the day, creating a dry placement that will allow it to stay on longer! The more you know.
