Figuring out what to eat for lunch can be a struggle. You might be thinking: “I need to eat healthy”, “I don’t want to spend a lot of money” or “I don’t have a lot of time to get lunch in-between classes.” If you’ve ever had any of these thoughts, Krishna Lunch is the answer you’re looking for.
Krishna Lunch is served on campus five days a week from 11:00a.m. to 1:30p.m. This gives almost every student the opportunity to stop by for a bite to eat in between their morning and afternoon classes. During my freshman year, I used to speed walk from all the way across campus to make sure I got a plate of food before my next class started up. The best part? It’s right outside Library West! Maybe you’re like me and spend a little too much time in the library. Take the opportunity to refuel for another round of studying and catch up with some friends while enjoying a hearty meal. If it’s a really nice day out, eating your Krishna Lunch outside might just make you want to stay and finish studying under the shady trees in Plaza of the Americas.
I repeat . . . FIVE DOLLARS! No matter which day you go, the price remains the same. All of us college students love a meal that is within our budget, and the fact that it’s a GOOD meal is even better. You might be thinking that you could get a meal for about the same price at Wendy’s, Chick-fil-A, or Taco Bell, but the special thing about Krishna Lunch is that it’s not only healthy, it is all you can eat. That’s right, you can fill up your plate as many times as you want. If you’re a dedicated Krishna Lunch lover, Krishna Lunch offers a deal where you pay for more than one meal ticket at once, which ends up saving you a few bucks in the long run. Essentially, to eat Krishna Lunch you’re paying less than five dollars for each meal if you participate in their deals. SCORE!
As someone who lives to eat, I can honestly say that this food really does make your mouth water. If you don’t believe me, take a look at the lines of people that wait for their plate to be filled. Krishna Lunch has a set menu, but each day of the week is different. All of the days are equally tasty, but the campus favorites are Wednesdays and Fridays. The flavor of rice, halava and drinks vary from day to day, according to their website. As an avid Krishna Lunch goer, I can vouch that all of the flavors are amazing. One of the more exciting things about the food is that there is no meat in anything. All of the lunches are vegan and vegetarian-friendly!
Picture this: You’re walking to Library West and decide to stop in the Plaza of the Americas, your stomach is begging for food. As you approach the plaza, you hear faint music. You look over and see a group of people playing drums and humming chants. You walk up to the table and pay for your meal ticket all while being greeted with genuine smiles. Then, you wait in line for the food and a nice man strikes up a conversation about how your day is going all while handing you a plate. Once you reach the servers, you are humming to the drums, smiling and filling your plate. With a plate full of healthy food, you find a shady spot in the grass and dig in to eat krishna lunch. Now imagine getting to experience this any day you want, Monday through Friday. These are the types of memories you will want to look back on later in life, memories made in the heart of the Gator Nation.
One of the things I love about UF is its efforts to be an eco-friendly campus, and Krishna Lunch builds off of that. For those that have or haven’t been to Krishna lunch yet and are conscientious of the environment, LISTEN UP. All of the plates and cups they use are eco-friendly and compostable. However, if you bring your own containers and reusable water bottle, they will put your food and drink in that instead of the paper plates and cups. Finding this out for the first time made me feel extremely good about our campus community’s efforts to protect the environment. Plus, bringing your own container means you can take your lunch to go, or even refill your container a second time and save it for dinner.
