5 Easy Ways To Update Your Bathroom

If you want to do an easy bathroom update, it can be done very affordably! There are a lot of small changes that can be made in a bathroom to create a space that feels new and refreshed. Whatever style you like, these updates can further enhance the look you’re going for. No need to make it a big project, just take a few trips to the store and you’ll be all set. Make sure you have a clear idea on your vision for the space before you get started! Look on Pinterest for ideas if you’re not sure where to begin.

1. Switch out the shower curtain.

This is the first step in any easy bathroom update, because aside from the wall color, your shower curtain dictates a lot of space and design influence. That’s why it’s smart to decide on a shower curtain first, because the rest of the design will flow from there. Avoid anything too bold or dark colored if your bathroom is small. Think about what colors you like, and what kind of feel you’d like the bathroom to have. It’s totally okay to stick to something neutral for this choice, too. Then you have flexibility with your other design choices.

In my recent bathroom update, I chose a white linen curtain with navy details. I previously had a shower curtain with bold navy stripes, and I wanted something more subtle and relaxing for the bathroom. This new curtain is so much lighter and it feels like a breath of fresh air! You can also think about switching out the curtain seasonally. It’s such an easy bathroom update. I’ve seen quite a few very cute Christmas shower curtains that would look great if they match the rest of your bathroom.

2. Invest in a few new rugs.

This is the next step for obvious reasons! Investing in a few new rugs will seriously make the space feel so fresh and new, and they are a treat for your feet. If you live somewhere where the winters are cold, or you don’t like the feeling of cold tile on your bare feet, then I would suggest getting enough rugs to cover most of the floor space in your bathroom. Definitely make sure you have a rug placed by the tub or shower, the toilet, and the vanity. These are the spaces where you’re standing the most, so it’s vital to have rugs there.

As far as the look and style of the rug, just make sure they match the wall color and the shower curtain. It’s nice to purchase rugs that have a built in rug pad on the bottom, so they don’t slide across the tile floor. But if this won’t bother you, then you have free range on what kind of rug to choose. Keep in mind that it’s easier to see dirt on lighter colors, but if you’re careful they can work out just fine!

3. Replace your towels.

You should definitely like your towels, because you have to use them everyday! I like to choose hand towels that are a little more decorative, but make sure they match my other towels as well. You’ll want to have enough body towels, hand towels, and wash cloths on hand for showering and drying your hands after washing them. If you’re going with a new style for the space, then it’s a great idea to invest in some new towels that go with the new scheme.

I usually stick to neutrals when buying new towels, so that if I do change the style or colors of my bathroom I don’t necessarily have to buy new towels. Definitely keep this in mind as you’re purchasing, especially if you’re on a budget. A nice cream or grey will go with just about every kind of bathroom!

4. Rethink your vanity space.

This was a really important step for me in my recent easy bathroom update. I had never really thought about how to effectively (or stylishly) use my vanity space. I don’t have much room, but I wanted to maximize it. By placing most of my items nicely organized in a drawer in the vanity, or in my linen closet, I had more room on the countertop to set things. I chose to keep out the items I use on a daily basis, like my toothbrush, face wash, and face lotion. Everything else went into the drawer.

Another thing that’s important is having a good mirror in the bathroom above your vanity. I do my make-up in the bathroom and so I’m glad I have a mirror that’s the right height, with adequate lighting for doing make-up at any time of day.

5. Add plants and other accessories.

When I visited some friends in New York, I was surprised that they had such a roomy bathroom. And not even that, but it felt like walking into a secret garden, because they had plants hanging from the ceiling and on the ground in their walk-in shower. From that moment I was inspired to one day have plants in my bathroom. I finally made the leap a few months ago, and I have to say my plants are thriving! They add a lot of life to the small space and thrive in the sometimes humid and steamy conditions of the bathroom.

If you have a window in the bathroom, think about the best kind of window treatment for the space. Other accessories could include stylish hooks for your towels, mirrors if you don’t have a good one already, and a decorative tissue box holder (I always dislike the designs on the actual tissue boxes for some reason!). You can even add art to your bathroom, I would just keep it simple and make sure it’s framed, that way it’s easy to clean.
