Up your selfie game with these 10 easy tricks! From weird angles to harsh lighting, there are little things that can throw you off your game. If you struggle to get a great pic, try these 1o tips to up your selfie game and get the perfect shot. Watch the Instagram likes come rolling in once you try these quick fixes!
The first mistake that selfie-takers make is taking photos inside, under fluorescent lights. There is nothing worse than bad lighting for a photo but it’s easy to fix this. Take your selfie in the morning or evening for the best, glowy lighting. Known as the “golden hours” the best lighting is as the sun is rising or setting. Make sure to angle your face towards the light for the ultimate ~glow~ but make sure to turn your face just right to avoid a too bright squinty eye! For the absolute ultimate shot, take your photo in the morning with the nice lighting since your hair and makeup will be fresh!
This is a key rule in photography but it shouldn’t be lost in your selfie-taking either! The rule of thirds is the concept that your image should be split into a field of threes. For the best image, you shouldn’t put your subject in the middle but on one of the lines, with your eyes close to an intersecting cross line (see below!) If you being the center of the frame isn’t producing the look you’re going for, try this tip to get a great shot!
If you stand straight on in your photo, it can be unflattering and boring. Make your photo pop by adding curves into your pose. Either put a hand on or near your waist or pop one leg forward to create curves. Doing both the hand and leg together is a go-to pose of many celebs and ‘grammers alike! Since I am only 5’1, I use this pose to not only add curves but also to make me look taller. This is truly a magical pose!
If your selfies are unflattering and you always look like you may have a double chin, switch up the angles. Bring your phone above eye level and tilt your chin slightly down for the most flattering snapshot. This will make your face look thinner and your eye more doe-like. Just be careful not to go too severe with either or it can come out looking a little forced and your features distorted.
This is a tip that so many people swear by, including models to look your best when taking a photo! When taking photos, press your tongue up against the roof of your mouth to make your face look thinner and prevent a double chin. This small fix will up your selfie game instantly! Make sure to elongate the neck before tilting it slightly down to get the right angle. It also helps to slightly part your lips if you aren’t into smiling to get the perfect shot.
Say goodbye to dirty bathroom mirror selfies or plain backgrounds and head outside to look for something with a little more interest! Whether it’s by some trees, at the beach or with a brick wall behind you, find what looks best. Don’t worry about it being an iconic location (save that for vacation selfies), just try for some variation in colors and good lighting and you’re guaranteed for a great photo. When you’re out and about during your day, feel free to snap a selfie whenever you find a backdrop you like!
Although at first, everyone made fun of people who used a selfie stick, now we know that if you get the hang of it, it can up your selfie game in no time! The great thing about selfie sticks is that you can use it the traditional way, holding it, or you can upgrade to the newer monopod styles that you can set up and take photos hands-free. This allows for getting more of the background in or getting to try some new poses-think the classic jumping or twirling shots that IG influencers love!
Have you ever followed someone on social media and realized that you’ve only ever seen one side of their face or that all their photos have similar poses? This is because they found what angle they liked and have stuck to it! You don’t have to have millions of followers to have a go-to angle and pose for your selfies. I am a huge fan of 1) glowy light 2) the knee pop and 3) a head tilt to the left and down. Find a pose that you feel you look best in and roll with it!
To keep your selfies from being boring and getting lost in a sea of photos, think about adding some interest to make it pop. Whether it is red lipstick, a fun headband or a piece of statement jewelry, make sure to have something eye-catching in your photo. Couple this with some of the other tips (the right angle is the most important) and it will be a great snapshot. While this is great advice for selfies it’s also solid wisdom when creating an outfit TBH.
Finally, if taking selfies the traditional way (holding the phone with one arm) isn’t doing it for you, think about going hands-free with a Bluetooth clicker! I am a huge fan of OOTD type selfies and getting a Bluetooth clicker changed my outfit photo game. For the ultimate hands-free shot, set your phone up with a monopod and use the clicker to get the just-right shot!
