Easy DIY Infinity Scarf Guide

Name a better way to prepare for the winter than for making your own infinity scarf. This way you can choose the perfect color, pattern, and size. Infinity scarves are often way to chunky or way to thin. This will no longer be an issue when creating your own DIY infinity scarf. This is a fun activity to try out during a rainy or cold day. This should not take longer than a half hour or so to do. Head to the local craft store and pick up different patterns of fabric before trying to make the infinity scarfs. This an awesome craft to do with friends or if you have children try out with them. If the child is old enough to handle a needle and thread this could be a fun craft for a child with adult supervision. The DIY infinity scarfs are a great idea for a Holiday party activity idea. This project can be carried out without a sewing machine. Would recommend using a sewing machine if possible, but not a big deal if there is not one readily available for use. Now let’s get to scarf making.

1. Materials

Pick out a fabric that is stretchy and not too thin. The cloth should be able to fall nicely. The best fabric for this project is a lighter weight fabric. This way the scarf can be worn more than just in the winter. If the scarf is lighter, it can be transferred into being worn in the fall and spring, not just the winter. For a chunkier scarf search for a fabric that is softer. A good example of a soft fabric would be any woven fabric, cotton, or chambray. For those who do not know, Chambray is a softer fabric that is typically used on summer clothing. Chambray is a great option for a lighter scarf for the fall or spring. Chambray looks relatively like a thinner denim material. A cotton fabric would be best for making an infinity scarf to wear during colder weather. Choose a pattern and texture that you prefer. When choosing, a texture look for a texture that does not itch or irritate the skin. This is important if you have sensitive or easily irritated skin. If choosing a patterned fabric, be aware that if it is only printed on one side it may look strange once the DIY scarf is created. Just something to keep in mind. Choose a fabric that is a little longer than half a yard long. Needles and thread are necessary as well. Other materials that are needed for this project are pins, an ironing board, and an iron.

2. Cut The Fabric

Begin by cutting the fabric into two even pieces. The pieces should be roughly about a foot x 2 ½ feet. The piece of fabric should end up looking like a rectangle. This is the perfect size. Then take these two pieces, and with a needle and thread begin to sew the two pieces together. Once completed the sewn together fabric should make one long rectangular piece of fabric.

3. Hem The Scarf

To hem continue with the same thread as used earlier in the DIY. Next iron a crease into the piece of fabric. This will be the crease of the hem. Cut off any excess fabric on the underside of the hem. Pin down the hem area to make sure that the hem is secure, and straight. Thread the needle, and then begin to sew right under the pins. This way the hem will remain straight. Once done tie the left-over thread into a knot, and tie off the remaining ends of the thread. The hem does not need to be anything amazing as it can be tucked away when wearing the infinity scarf.

4. Sew The Edges Of The Scarf

Where the scarf was cut, it is important to not leave the other edges of the strip of fabric. Now that you know how to hem, take the same skills and use it on the other three edges of the fabric. Once completed, all the edges should look like the originally hemmed edge. Sew the two ends of the scarf together. The scarf should be in a perfect loop.

5. Ways To Style The DIY Infinity Scarf

The most basic way to wear an infinity scarf is the double loop. To achieve this style, place the infinity scarf around your neck as normal. Then take the leftover half of the scarf that is hanging down and form another loop. For reference, the scarf should be shaped like a figure 8. Place the second loop over the head. Now there should be two loops, and not a ton of excess scarf hanging down.

An infinity scarf can be worn just with the single loop. The single loop is simple. This look can be flattering with a long sweater, or even a sweater dress. Another simple look is the knot. The knot is the female version of a tie, but more comfortable. The knot is simple to create. Begin by putting the scarf around your neck, and then letting the excess hang. With the excess part of the bottom tie a knot on the scarf. The knot is great for slightly dressier occasions. This would be a great look to wear to an office or a company luncheon.

These are just a few of the styles to name a few. These scarves are a great gift idea for friends and family for the upcoming holiday season. This gift has a nice personal touch. People will feel so loved by the idea that you took the time to give them a handmade gift. There is nothing like it. Or if you plan to keep the scarf for yourself take pride in the fact that you made the infinity scarf with your own two hands. That is not exactly easy. It is cool to be able to say that the scarf was handmade by yourself. Now it’s time to get sewing!
