Dorm Room Organization Tips

For most of us, the new semester is in full swing and we’ve had enough time to settle into our new class routines. But, with crazy busy schedules, it can be hard to keep your dorm room organized. There’s nothing worse than running late to class only to realize that you can’t find your cell phone or your keys because your room is completely unorganized. I’ve been there and it sucks. To keep this from becoming an everyday scenario, I’ve compiled a list of 10 dorm room organization tips to help you keep your room tidy and organized this semester.

  1. Use the under bed storage.

A lot of dorm rooms come with lofted beds (If not, you can purchase bed risers from nearly anywhere). Take advantage of that extra space! It’s perfect for storing suitcases or tote bins or all the stuff that you use to pack your things in that you have no clue where else to put them. It’s also a great place to shove extra clothing/shoes that you’re not using at the time.

  1. Buy storage cubes.

The great thing about storage cubes is that they’re incredibly affordable and the possibilities are endless in terms of what you can use those things for. I use them in my closet to store bags/purses, belts, hats, and other countless accessories. Or if you (like many of us) have the miscellaneous junk drawer, you can shove all that stuff in a storage cube and it’s instantly neater.

  1. Velvet Hangers.

Most college dorm rooms have very limited closet space and it can be a huge struggle trying to find space for all your clothes. Velvet hangers and thin, sturdy, and your clothes won’t just fall off of them like they would on plastic hangers. Plus the fact that they’re thin means that you can fit more hangers/clothes in one space.

  1. Over-The-Door show organizers.

Just buy one. Even if you have no idea what to use it for now, just get one. I’ve used them to store, well… shoes. But I’ve also used it to store hair products, cleaning products, etc.

  1. Storage ottomans.

They’re great for extra storage and they make for great extra seating.

  1. Command hooks.

Most colleges don’t allow students to put holes in the walls. Command hooks solve that problem completely. You can hang or mount just about anything on them and it won’t ruin the walls. I have the tendency to throw bags and jackets anywhere, but having command hooks reminds me to put them where they belong.

  1. 3 Drawer Shelving Unit.

You can get a plastic shelving unit from Wal-Mart (and I’m sure other places) for under $20 and they’re amazing! A lot of dorm rooms have small closets, so extra storage space for clothes is always a plus.

  1. Always roll, don’t fold your clothes.

This is a great organization tips to get your clothes to fit in your small dorm dresser. Rolling jeans and T-shirts save so much space!

  1. Throw things away.

You’re probably in the dorm rooms for a good 8-9 months out of the year and I’m sure throughout that time, you’re going to accumulate more things. Every few months, go through your hair/makeup and hygiene products and throw out what’s used up or doesn’t work. Go through your closet and get rid of those clothes that you brought with you that you know you’re never going to wear.

  1. Get a Pinterest account.

If you don’t have Pinterest, get one ASAP. There are so many Dorm organization tips and projects that are fun and crafty. I get a lot of my inspiration for DIY projects and room decor from Pinterest.

I hope you find these tips helpful in keeping your dorm room organized and looking good this semester.
