Dorm Room Ideas: College Essentials You Should Know

Going to college for the first time is nerve-racking. Having to come up with dorm room ideas? Yeah that just adds more pressure. Seriously what is with the size of those rooms? Sure you may not be taking everything you own to college but you’re still gonna need space for more than three items.*

That’s where I come in. I’ve come up with a list of dorm room ideas you’re gonna love. Don’t worry, I’ve kept the list of essentials to a minimum – no need to increase the stress that comes with moving into a dorm for the first time. If you wanna know what dorm room ideas are an absolute must have then keep on reading!

*said in exaggeration, you of course have space for more than three items – like maybe five or six!

1. Rise Up

A lot of college dorm room beds are adjustable and can be lifted to give you more space beneath your bed. This allows you to place additional storage units under the bed and you’re able to maximize the little space you’re given!

2. Do You Even Lift?

If your dorm doesn’t have the option of lifting the beds, you can always purchase bed risers. These risers are perfect because they provide enough lift to be able to store a little extra something under the bed and they also come with USB and power outlets. The days of struggling to find a free outlet for your phone charger are over!

3. Night Rollers

Buy a rolling cart as your nightstand. Trust me, you’ll thank me later. You can put daily essentials on the top, like your phone. You can also add a fake plant to it, making this cart efficient and cute. On the other shelves you can put textbooks and other miscellaneous items you can’t seem to find a home for.

Also, you can pile whatever crap you want on the cart and roll it to wherever you need it without having to carry everything (the lazy girl in me loves this).

4. I Command Organization

Five words: Command hooks are your friend. You can stick these hooks anywhere and bam, you’ve freed up some otherwise occupied space. Can’t figure out where to store your scarves? Command hooks! Are your necklaces always a tangled mess? Hang them individually on some hooks! Seriously, you can stick these inside a cupboard and hang baskets on them – even more storage! It’s strange how something so tiny can provide solutions to so many problems.

5. Let’s Clear This Out

These clear desk organizers are a game changer. You can store pens, papers, books, and other school supplies in these. The level of organization these provide not only make it easier to locate everything, but it just helps you feel more put together.

You don’t only have to use these for school supplies, you can use them for whatever you feel the need to. If you’re someone who has a lot of makeup, these organizers would be great to separate and store each item based on its use (e.g. lipsticks in one, mascaras in the other etc.).

6. Stack Up

If you’re living in a dorm, chances are closet space is so very limited, it may as well not be there. That’s why this stacking drawer unit is perfect. You can put it underneath the clothes that you’re hanging and use it to store various things such as undergarments, towels, and t-shirts.

Pro-tip: Roll whatever pieces of clothing you can and then store them. This provides more space and it lets you clearly see what pieces of clothing are available to wear.
