10 Dorm Room Decorations To Create A Home Away From Home

Styling a dorm room is a very personal task and we all want for our dorm room decorations to reflect us as people and to give us a cozy, safe feeling. I have provided a list of ten dorm room decorations that will not only make your room the cutest on the hall, but will provide anyone that home away from feeling.

1. Indoor Trees

Having an indoor tree in your space will give you the feeling of being surrounded by nature. I Knew a girl who shared a room with two other people and she used a indoor tree to create a divider between her and her roommates. You can just use yours as a corner decoration, but food for thought.

2. Moon Lamp

This is one of my favorite dorm room decorations in this list! This orb that is made to look like a glowing moon and acts as a night light. It is perfect for your inner wolf or the part of you that is obsessed with staring at the night sky. This is great for people who find themselves in rooms where they can’t see the moon or even the sky (I once had a room that had a large brick wall as a view, I and would have loved this).

3. Wall Tapestry

Tapestries can act like windows into where we hope to be or once were. Whether if home is in the woods or on a beach, a tapestry can put you back there! They are also a great way to decorate a wall when you can’t think of anything else.

4. Twilights

Going along with the theme of missing the night sky, these lights are perfect to string up over your bed. They look like little stars and offer some nice soft light if your dorm lights are too harsh. These lights are very relaxing and the warm light gives a homey feeling that any college student could use. Before you endeavor though, make sure that your dormitory allows string lights, I learned the hard way that mine did not…

5. Potted Plants

If you don’t have the space for a tree in your room, potted plants are a great alternative. Smaller dorm decorations can be used more in a space and not only create cohesion, but can take away from the stark white walls. Being a suburban girl living in the city, I really liked being able to bring in the greenery that I wasn’t seeing outside and I think you will too!

6. Hanging plants

Can you see a theme here? Hanging plants are a great option to give some dimension to your dorm room, but they also can be beneficial if you are lacking a lot of surface area. Many dorms will not allow you to hang things from the ceiling but you can hang your plants on the wall if you have a hook or even a bed like pictured below. Plants warm up a space, and for people like me, being surrounded by greenery transports you into an oasis that is all your own.

7. Hanging Picture Frames

This is the clearest way to bring home to school. By surrounding yourself with the memories and faces of those you love, it is the quickest way to feel at home! However, sometimes you want something other than a standard black frame to put those pictures in. Here is a great alternative that is very chic! These frames will highlight whatever pictures you place in them and add style and flare to your room.
