10 Dorm Organization Tips That Will Make Spring Cleaning Easier

With spring arriving soon, it is time to get cleaning, and the best place to start is your dorm room. Check out these dorm organization tips now that will make spring cleaning a breeze.

1. Declutter your desk

Over the course of the semester, you probably accumulated mounds of papers and books with pencils, paper clips, index cards etc. scattered all over the place. Evidently, nobody can study in a disheveled environment. One dorm organization tip is to organize your desk by utilizing mason jars, or using an inexpensive desk organizer that you can conveniently buy at Target. Get an drawer organizer tray as well to put little things like paper clips and post-it-notes in.

2. Wash everything

There is a good chance that you have this morning’s coffee mug or last night’s dinner plate lying around in your sink (or in your room). To prevent dirty, nasty dishes from piling up, clean them immediately after using them, or place them in the dishwasher.

3. Make your bed everyday

To get in dorm organization mode, first get in the habit of making your bed every single day. It only takes two minutes tops, and it instantly makes your room look nicer and cleaner. You will probably get a better night’s sleep as well by jumping into a freshly-made bed.

4. Bring your winter clothes home

You are not going to need a parka in the spring. When you have the chance, bring all your winter clothes home with you. It is one less thing you have to worry about, or lug around with on moving-out day. If you cannot make it back home, use an under the bed storage container to store any unneeded clothes. This will help give your closet more space.

5. Keep a mini filing cabinet

You probably have a stack of important essays, notes, and tests that you do not want to throw away. To get organized, use a file folder for each class and use dividers to organize them by semester and place them all in a filing cabinet.

6. Throw away an unneeded stuff

While going through the stack of papers, you will probably find a few things that you do not need. Instead of hoarding them, get rid of them to prevent clutter.

7. Disinfect everything

You probably do not think about cleaning light switches, door handles, and remote controls. But if you have a lot of people coming in and out of your dorm, it might be a good idea to use a Clorox Wipe and wipe everything down once in a while. This will prevent any illness from spreading. Who knows when was the last time the door handles have been cleaned?

8. Get in the habit of dusting, mopping, and vacuuming

You are an adult now and for the rest of your life, you are going to be cleaning your room. If you have carpeted floors, vacuum them at least once a week. If you have wooden floors, mop them. You can even use a Swiffer sweeper. Also, there is probably a lot of dust accumulating on your bookshelf. It is always a good idea to dust it along with other furniture at least once a month.

9. Avoid putting anything on the floor

When it is a long, tiring day, you probably throw your books, coat, dirty laundry, etc on the floor. However, your room looks instantly cleaner if you keep the floors bare and clean. Use a hamper to put your dirty clothes in, and hang your coat up.

10. Invest in room spray or a plug in air freshener.

Since candles are barred at most college, buy a can of Febreeze or a plug in air freshener to make your room smell more fresh instead of like dirty plates and socks. Dorm rooms are so small and compact that smells are more noticeable, so you want to keep your dorm smelling nice.
