Are you halfway through your college career and starting to realize that you hate your major. Maybe it’s the professors or maybe you’ve lost just interest in whatever you’re studying. Here are a few reasons why you shouldn’t stick with a major that doesn’t interest you.
Trust me, even for people who love their major, there are gonna be times when you question if college is worth it. You’re gonna be assigned a very draining task that will test your abilities. Thankfully, the major that your passionate about will help you push through those difficult times. Now imagine if you hated your current major and resented every second spent in class? Four years is a long time to spend studying something that you deem a waste of time. Even if your major is known to produce wealthy graduates, that does not guarantee that all of your strife will be rewarding in the end. Your major should be something that challenges you mentally but is also very rewarding.
Not only will you be suffering mentally and emotionally from classes, but you’ll also waste money on a degree that you hate. If you’re gonna spend a fortune on something that’s meant to enhance your livelihood, at least make sure it’s something that you enjoy studying.
Now everyone’s situation is different, but don’t decide to switch up your major in your senior year. Even while you’re taking care of your core classes, you should be researching what kind of classes you’re destined to take for your major. I can recall being a psychology major and being fairly interested in the field. Unfortunately, this path required me to take countless math classes which not only dragged my GPA down but caused me unwarranted stress. So after some soul searching, I eventually settled on becoming an English major and I never looked back. Thankfully all of this took place in my sophomore year but others are not so lucky to realize what they truly wanna study in college.
So you managed to graduate despite your resentment towards your major? Well, now it’s time to join the workforce! What? You thought that your suffering ended once you walked across that stage? No sir/ma’am, now you have to apply whatever useless skillset (your feelings, not mine) that you’ve learned to your new job! And be hopeful that the major begrudgingly finished isn’t extremely specific to one field. But hey, tons of people have careers in fields that weren’t even remotely close to what they studied in college.
So, are you someone who’s currently trapped in a major they hate? You may be asking, “How can I escape this self-imposed hell?” Well, the answer to that question requires some soul-searching. First of all, what is your passion and is it something that your school can offer you? If you’re not sure about that, speak to the advisors on campus and they should point you in the right direction. You’d be surprised how many students are just floating while attending college. Sure they’re taking classes but many of them are lost in more ways than one. They have picked a major but said major isn’t exactly the craft that they want to perfect. If you find your self falling into this category, then heed my warnings and choose what’s best for you before it’s too late! As the saying goes, if you do something you love, you’ll never work a day in your life. This should be something that you strive towards on your way to greatness.
