College Life

Don’t Let Financial Stability Define Your Worth

Ever look at the financial state you and your family is in? Ever think you’ll never make it out of the city or town you’re in right now because you don’t have the funds to go to college and receive a higher education? I grew up in decent middle class family but once my dad passed away, we slowly lost a lot of money because his income was what sustained our family. However, I never gave up in high school and was able to start to attend a prestigious university, Hofstra.

Here are a few reasons why you should not let you and your family’s financial stability define your worth and future when it comes to furthering your education.

Work hard in school.

When you reach your senior year of high school, it is just the beginning of the rest of your life. Finish off strong because there will be so many scholarship opportunities coming your way!

Get a job earlier on in your high school career.

Every penny counts, honestly and truly when it comes to college. If you begin to work at the age of 16, there is a possibility to save at least $5000 by the time college comes around.

Start off small, if need be.

There is no shame to start at a community college. Start taking courses in high school if there are dual enrollment programs offered. FREE college credits are the best credits.

Don’t be afraid to reach out and make connections.

Yes, this is totally acceptable. Go to your mayor, or any local governmental worker, teacher, even your doctor! They can bring some hope for you if they write you an amazing letter of recommendation, especially if they are notable alumni for the school you are applying to!

Apply to every single grant and scholarship that you qualify for!

It’s annoying, don’t get me wrong, but it’s so worth it! If you are really motivated to apply to every single scholarship offered, you might even get almost if not all your school paid for by those scholarships and grants!

Take out loans, everyone does it.

Many people who oppose college education will keep brainwashing you by saying tasking out loans will ruin your life. That is not true. If you go to college, you are more likely to get a job you love and take pride in and hopefully a well paying job to pay off those loans!

Work while you are in college!

Almost everyone does this, and it’s a big help! If you get a job on campus, you might not have many hours but if you get one off campus, you will be making bank!

Don’t buy unnecessary items.

Sometimes, when we are young, we like to go to the mall and buy a new pair of shoes or a new outfit for the party Saturday night. Stop yourself from doing it, save those 100 bucks and put it towards your college fund.

Always remember, everyone has to start somewhere.

Not everyone is born a trust-fund baby or born into the 1 percent family and that’s okay. If anything, it will define you as a hard-worker and an ambitious person.

It doesn’t matter if you are poor or rich. If you have the brains and motivation to succeed in college, you will make it happen one way or another. You have to keep working hard because if you do, you will get there!

Don’t take it out on your family if you cannot afford college, a good percentage of Americans cannot. Stay humble, work hard and watch the results !
