Owning a dog is one of the best things you can do. Nothing beats a walk with your four-legged friend or seeing the joy on their faces when you pick up a ball and they know it’s playtime. Even relaxing at home feels better in each other’s company. While dogs are often thought of in the countryside on long walks, it doesn’t mean city livers have to miss out on all the joy. There are many breeds perfect to suit the city life.
The pug has distinctive features of a wrinkly, short-muzzled face, and adorable curled tail. They originated in China, dating back to the Han dynasty and legend has it that their wrinkles resemble good luck symbols in the Chinese language. Pugs were originally bred to be a lap dogs, which makes them perfect for city life. They aren’t inclined to be yappy or to bark, something your neighbors will appreciate if you live in an apartment or flat. Because of their size and proneness to laziness they don’t need much exercise.
Also known as the sausage dog or wiener dog the dachshund has tiny little legs so they don’t need much space to get a workout, so a backyard is not a necessity. They come in three varieties: smooth (shorthaired), wirehaired and longhaired and all are equally as cute! Over the years they have ranked near the top of most popular dogs lists since the 1950s. Indoors they will be super energetic, with an independent nature and playful spirit but very loving, loyal and affectionate.
Other than the fact we want to dress our Chihuahua up in pretty clothes and carry round in our handbag there are many other reasons they are a breed perfect for city life. Renowned for being the world’s smallest dog, but they may well have the world’s biggest personality stashed inside their tiny bodies. They are known for escaping from yards and through small gaps, which is why it doesn’t matter if you don’t have a garden. Can be untrusting of strangers, so it’s best to supervise them in social situations.
The Pomeranian is a breed of dog of the Spitz type that is named for the Pomerania region in north-west Poland and north-east Germany in Central Europe. If they are properly socialized with other dogs and animals, they generally get along quite well with them but otherwise can be harassing. Pomeranians are not an overly dependent breed, so they make a good pet for someone who spends time out of the house. Despite all of this they are loving and will often curl up on you or near you to sleep. They are active but regular walks and playing will do them fine.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a small spaniel that originated in the United Kingdom. If the characteristic wagging of the Cavalier’s plumy tail doesn’t melt your heart, surely their large, dark round eyes will. They are very intelligent, therefore easy to train to suit the city life. They are a housedog and will never thrive in an environment where they’re relegated to the backyard or otherwise ignored. So perfect for living in an apartment!
A Schnauzer is a dog breed type that originated in Germany from the 14th to 15th centuries. The term comes from the German word for “snout” and means mustache because of the dog’s distinctively bearded snout. Because of their small size, they don’t require rigorous exercise. They learn quickly and want to please, which makes them great therapy dogs.
Always remember that whatever the dog breed, size or personality it does still need exercise and love. Dogs really are a mans best friend and a great companion.
