Do Apps Help You or Just Waste Your Time?

I’ve always been slightly curious about whether or not phone apps help you or simply distract you and waste time. I have absolutely no idea what sparked this curiosity in me and I’ll admit that it’s a rather odd thing to wonder about. But, that’s what I’m here for– to ask bizarre questions about random things and answer said bizarre questions with extensive research for those who have the same curiosity that I have. This time, it’s about whether or not phone apps help you or hurt you. Let’s get started!

Pro: They Can Help Relieve Stress

There are few better ways to boost one’s mood than the feeling of victory that comes with knowing you have finally figured out a difficult mobile phone app video game level and completed the game successfully. This usually comes with games that involve users trying to find their ways around demolishing the enemy’s Crown Towers, like in Clash Royale Gemmes, where users have an excellent visual approach and are equipped with great mechanics. In addition, playing on a mobile phone app game can help to keep anxiety at bay and promote relaxation. If just by playing video mobile games, people get happier, then why would anyone ever dispute the emotional benefits? There are few things that offer a better feeling than besting a skilled opponent, obtain an impossible achievement, or using a mobile bonus to its full effect through good tactical thinking and sheer strategic prowess. But don’t just take my word for it! Science has already proved the link between playing games and positive mood effects. A 2014 study conducted at the University College in London established a correlation between the total number of hours spent playing games and the rate at which gamers recovered from the effects of work-related stress. In the study, researchers surveyed 491 participants. A 2009 study published in the Journal of Cyber Therapy & Rehabilitation found that casual video gaming (CVG) can alleviate depression, improve mood, and reduce stress levels. That is because CVGs apparently increase right alpha brain wave activity, a phenomenon associated with excitement and euphoric behaviors. Therefore, no matter why you play video games —for competing against other players or relaxation—the results are the same: you will feel better after the fact.

Pro: They Can Help You Learn

Playing mobile app games, providing you choose the right ones, like Two Dots, Where’s My Water, and even things like bingo, as well as mystery titles like those in the Inspector Layton series, can help to keep your brain engaged, improve spatial awareness and even boost your memory when played regularly. That is why more older people should consider playing these games that many of them think are a waste of time. Even playing just a few minutes each day can be beneficial. Anyone who’s ever played Lightbot, which teaches kids how to code, or apparatus, which is a physics-based title, for example, will know that games on phone apps can actually teach you new skills and give you new information. It’s just a matter of choosing wisely. All phone app games involve certain rules. This means that the player has to think carefully before making any move to ensure that they stay within the required rules of that particular game. The player needs to make split-second decisions that will determine whether or not he or she will advance to the next level. Gaming is not only beneficial to adults and teenagers, but to children as well. Many modern education institutions incorporate video games as a teaching methodology. This helps these children improve their academic skills by providing video games that are specifically aimed at enhancing their cognitive and creative skills. While gaming, the brain receives multiple stimulations, both Visual and audial. According to research, individuals who play video games frequently can process these stimulators faster than others. These stimulators ensure that the brain is continuously working to interpret them. You know, now that I think about it, it seems like a lot of these involve games of some sort…

Pro: They Help Build Social Communities

It’s fair to say that many mobile games, like Words with Friends 2 and Scrabble, are great at bringing people together. It might be difficult to play games with granny when she lives three states away, but you can play with her every night using the right technology, and more and more people are doing just that – using mobile games to maintain relationships and even create new communities with people all over the world who enjoy the same interests. Another study discovered that people with autism are usually more engaged when they are celebrating victory as they share space with multiple players. Lack of communication is usually a hard issue for those with autism, but increased social interaction from games that involve multiple players can help them. With the above, you can defend yourself proudly when anyone asks you the benefits of mobile games. Online gaming enables many players to engage in a particular game simultaneously. As such, there is constant communication between the players which in turn results in the development of meaningful as well as casual relationships among them. This helps players meet new friends while also strengthening bonds with their old friends. Though computer games might be beneficial, there is a need to play them in moderation. It is also important to pick the right game as not all of them provide the same cognitive benefits. Age should also be a factor– small children should not be exposed to violent games.
