Some days you just want to make a craft, especially one with chill summertime vibes. One of the easiest and most loved crafts by the general population is definitely tie-dye. It’s not going away no matter how much the naysayers try. It will still be one of the most popular festivals, picnic, beach, and summer weekend patterns out there. If you’re looking for something fun to do while you are relaxing at home on the weekend then, look no further than this list of DIY tie-dye ideas that would make the perfect summer craft.
If you want to represent the pattern of the season but still want to keep your normal neutral color palette, then go for a neutral tie-dye. This is done most easily by dying a white t-shirt with black dye. You could also dye a black t-shirt with some bleach and that would also give you a darker or more neutral look. This kind of tie-dye shirt can honestly be worn anywhere and any day of the week, that’s how versatile it is.
Everyone definitely wants to represent the colors and one of the best DIY activities of the season but maybe not on as big of a canvas as a t-shirt or sweatshirt. Dying socks in a fun pattern can keep some of that fun, summer spirit with you even when you have to go to work or run errands where a tie-dyed hoodie might not be the best thing to wear. Socks are also great to dye because they’d be quick and not use too much dye, so you could quickly move onto another DIY craft or make another pair of socks. It really is up to you. It’s summertime, after all.
Who doesn’t love watermelon and tie-dye? Now with this DIY craft, you can bring the two loves of summer together in an amazing look. This design is rather easy to do. Dye the top half in a red or pink dye and then make the bottom green. Leave a white stripe in the middle for that perfect watermelon rind look. Then, after the shirt is dry, paint or draw on the watermelon seeds for the top half. Now you have a totally realistic watermelon pattern! You could do this pattern on a shirt, blanket, sheets, or even socks. Just don’t forget to snap a photo for your Instagram and then go eat a real piece of watermelon afterward.
What says summer music festivals and parties than a pair of unique tie-dye overalls. No matter where you are, you’ll definitely get a ton of compliments on your outfit and people will be beyond surprised that you made them yourself. It looks like it might be complicated, but all you really need is some white denim overalls and some dye! This tie-dye idea can work with short overalls or long overalls, but the summer look would definitely be to invest in a shorter pair. Overall you can dye any kind of white denim pretty easily whether it be jeans, a jacket, a skirt, or overalls. So, if you’ve been bitten with the DIY bug this summer, don’t let your aspirations halt at overalls.
Have your bed feel and look like summertime all year long with this DIY tie-dye sheet idea. Your room will look even more carefree and amazing and it will help you get some great, chill vibes even in your sleep. I don’t know if that latter has actually been proven, but it definitely couldn’t hurt. This craft is also great for people who are having trouble finding something to do on a warm summer day. Do you feel like you want to do something, like be productive or redecorate, but also want to relax and drink some ice tea at home? Then this fun but slightly time-consuming DIY tie-dye idea would be for you.
Carry all of your beach or park essentials in a bag with a pure summertime feel. Tie dying a bag will make even carrying all of your heavy beach chairs feel like one of the joys that come with summer. When picking dyes for your bag, go for bright colors if you want the bag to be instantly identifiable or if you just want to have fun with designing your own multi-colored bag. If you want the bag to be more subdued, you can always dye with blues, dark purples, or black.
Keep warm during those breezy summer nights by the campfire or out at the beach with a Tie Dye hoodie. This will be your favorite sweatshirt for all those evening activities not just during the summer but for many nighttimes and seasons to come. All you’ll need is a white sweatshirt and some choice dye. You can go classic with rainbow or multi-color or you can stick to a specific color family. Blue tie-dye would look great for lazy beach days and red or pink tie dye would look great for a day window shopping. No matter what colors you choose, the main part of the fun is tie dying the sweatshirt and making memories while doing it.
Slip on some sunshine with these tie dye shoes. Tie dye shoes would be fun to have and wear because not a lot of people will have them. No one else will definitely have your shoes since you did them yourself! You can dye the shoes just like dying a regular t-shirt but just put some vaseline or coconut oil around areas where you don’t want dye; like the soles. Also, if you’re dying shoes this way, remember to remove the laces. While it would be cool to dye the laces individually, crisp white laces against the dyed shoe would look really cool. Also, you probably don’t want random drops of dye all over your shoe laces. Another way to dye shoes is to color them with permanent markers and then pour water to spread the ink.
Summer is the season for picnics. When you’re putting together your picnic with all of the delicious summer snacks like watermelon, juice, and hamburgers make sure your picnic blanket looks the part as well. After all, it will be the star of the show and the center of all of the activity. For a fun blanket that will be on the ground a lot, have fun with the dying process. It definitely doesn’t have to look organized or “put together” just have a great time doing it and making the blanket look unique. When you’re done dying and it’s all dry, people will definitely be drawn to the fun colors and the cool pattern that only you could do.
