15 DIY Projects To Spice Up Your Tiny Apartment

It’s called doing it yourself for a reason. We all want to be the next Chip and Joanna Gaines and do our little projects. Most millennial’s can only afford tiny spaces and places in the modern economy and they definitely can’t afford to buy new furniture as well. So what if there was a way to spice up your living space in an affordable way.

1. Crate Bookshelf

Taking something that is no longer useful and making it beautiful is something that should be admired. Crates aren’t really used anymore (mainly because it causes waste). But a new trend started a few years ago….Turning old crates into functioning bookshelves! These crates can be found in grocery stores or in craft stores. After a combining the various crates and sanding them down (trust me that’s important), stain or paint the crates your favorite color and make this the centerpiece of your living room or bedroom!

2. Refrigerator Rack

For a small kitchen finding a space is important. A refrigerator rack is the perfect solution. It’s a convenient solution to accessing your cups and kitchen towels. You can re-purpose a shower caddy and a iron basket.

3. Command Center

The place that keeps everything organized. The Command center is the place where you keep your schedules and everything important in full view. You can get majority of the things for the command center at a craft store. You can get a mini chalkboard and wall calendar for cheap. And a mini shoe rack or bench off of Amazon.

4. Cup Wall

The perfect place for wine glasses or coffee cups. A cup wall isn’t the safest thing but its convenient for when guest are over. Its the ultimate organization tool for saving space for a tiny kitchen. Just make sure you don’t have too much on the wall.

5. Lazy Susan

A lazy Susan is usually used in the kitchen! But can also be used for other functions. You can use it as a rotating spice rack. Or even build your own and make it as big as you want. My favorite function would probably for clothes and shoes in the closet to save space and to show options.

6. Entertainment Center

The focal point of the entire apartment. A store bought entertainment center can sometime be expensive. But a DIY one can not only combine your color scheme but also add a pop to your living room. You can store DVD’s in baskets and separate them by genre. You can also buy a low table and mount your TV for less than $100.

7. Hidden Trash Can

Nobody wants to have a dingy and dirty trash can making their place look bad or cheap.  A hidden trash can can eliminate that. You can re-purpose wood and build one or you can take a wooden laundry basket and store a trash can. This also can hide the smell of trash and help store other needed cleaning supplies.

8. Chairs

Re-purposed wood can have many functions. Building your own chairs can sound hard but it actually isn’t. Building your own chairs can save on money as well. You wouldn’t have to pay upward of $300. Re-purposed wood is very cheap and easy to work with. You can also use crates anything that can be re-purposed.

9. Lights

Let there be light! Creating your own light fixtures can be fun. You can you something as simple as yarn or tissue paper. Or you can even use Mason Jars. Light fixtures in the apartment can be fun and festive.

10. Laundry Room

I love looking at pictures on Pinterest of Laundry rooms. It’s so aesthetically pleasing sometimes. I feel like the laundry room or area is the space that you can be the most expressive. You can use baskets and bins to separate and organize your clothes. As well as racks for detergents and for drying!

11. Bathroom

Probably the smallest room in your apartment! The bathroom can get cluttered fast. Some DIY projects can eliminate some of that clutter. You can turn a cardboard box into a basket for to hold toilet paper. Or Mason Jars to hold your brushes (for the teeth and face) and other things near your sink. And so much more!

12. Photo Wall

A great way to decorate you place without the use of frames. A photo wall is only recently becoming popular. You can create this wall with the use of clothes pins and string lights. Or by pinning photos on a decorative board and using push pins to hang the photos. It not only adds adds a retro feel to the place but also allows you to easily add photos at any time.

13. Bedroom

The most comfortable room in the house. There aren’t too many DIY projects in the bedroom. You could re-purpose wood from any other project and build a foot stool. Or build steps to get into the bed. You can add some crate bookshelves or wire bins to organize your bedroom.

14. Closet

Organization is important! And the closet is important. You can buy bins and baskets to add space and de-clutter your closet. Or even add some hand-built shoe racks. Or even if you have a walk-in you can use plastic organizer bins and labeled baskets.

15. Tables

There can also be another use for cheaper wood; building your own table! It can either be big or small. Building your own table isn’t hard either. You can make end tables or even a coffee table. This saves on money and adds a rustic feel to your place.

Just because the space is tiny doesn’t mean that it can’t be beautiful. I’ve always found that I got a satisfaction with making things my own to fit my unique style. It’s one of the many reasons why I love doing DIY projects.

Spicing up your living space and make it your own on a budget is the ultimate goal! DIY is in and living expensive is out. Comment and share some of your favorite DIY projects to spice up your tiny apartment.
