A couple of weeks ago I did a post about making a hat from an old sweater. Now I’ll teach you how to make gloves by recycling an old sweater! You’ll never have to spend money on hats or gloves again. The tutorial is pretty similar to the other one, however you are using a mitten pattern instead of a hat pattern, but I’ll give you the instructions below.
You’ll need:
Trace your hand on a piece of paper
Make the mitten pattern by adding half an inch to the tracing of your hand, and a full inch at the bottom for the cuff of the mitten. If there is a different pair of mittens that fit you well, you can also use that as your guide. Be sure to open it up a little between your thumb and the rest of your fingers so your thumb isn’t too close.
Cut out the pattern and pin it to the front of the sweater. Much like the hat, you’ll want to put the pattern so the bottom matches up with the hemline of the sweater.
Cut around the pattern, so you’ll end up with two pieces of sweater that will be sewn together to make one mitten.
Repeat this process, making sure to flip the pattern so you don’t make two of the same hand.
Flip the fabric so it’s inside out, and pin together the mittens.
Now sew the material together, with a 1/4 in. seam allowance, and flip right-side out again. And now you’ve made your own pair of mittens!
