DIY Lip Balm Locket

Ever had that favorite tube of lipstick, and you reach that point where there’s not enough left for you to use, but you can’t quite bear to throw it out? Or a lipstick that you like but don’t always want to be carrying around? You can turn that lipstick into lip balm that you can carry around with you in a locket. You could also use your favorite lip balm. I personally like this idea because this way I won’t worry about having to losing it since it’ll be around my neck.

Materials:

Old/cheap locket, lipstick or lip balm, beeswax, coconut oil, cheese grater, and sauce pan.

The next steps explain how to turn that little piece of lipstick into a lip balm, but if you’d rather use just a lip balm you have lying around, you don’t need to use the beeswax and coconut oil.

First, grate enough beeswax for 1 teaspoon. Then, combine that with the lipstick (you shouldn’t use any more than the length from the cuticle to the top of your pinky nail), and 1/2 teaspoon of coconut oil. Heat this mixture over low heat, stirring it until it becomes liquid. But don’t let it boil!

Make sure that your locket is already laying open, and that you either have a plate or some newspaper underneath it. This is going to get a little messy.

Now, once your mixture is liquid, carefully pour the tiniest stream you can from the pan into one side of the locket. If your locket lays flat on its surface, you can immediately pour into the other side once you’ve finished the first side. Let it set for at least 60 seconds before you move it.

If your locket doesn’t lay flat, finish pouring your mixture into one side, and let it set for the 60 seconds. Heat up your mixture again and then pour it into the other side (which would now be flat), and let that set for 60 seconds.

Use a Q-Tip or toothpick to clean up any of lip balm that has gotten on the inside edge of the locket, and use a paper towel to wipe off the outside, and leave it in the fridge for an hour or so. Then show off to all your friends!

If you’d rather use lip balm and a hair dry to make this locket, there’s a good tutorial for that at Radical Possibilities.
