DIY Dorm Closet Organization

When it comes to organization, vertical space is vital. Wasting space is not a given in college. In some colleges, rooms are shared with one or two other people, so space is limited as is. Whether you share a closet or have the privilege of having one to yourself, here are a few DIY dorm closet organization ideas to help maximize space and avoid nasty grams from your RA about being cleaner.

1) Give Your Purse a Proper Home

Purses are a girl’s best friend. They hold all of our valuables and even act as an on-the-go pharmacy and make up station. Each purse has its own unique qualities and styles, and we want to treat them to way they treat us. To decide on how to organize your purse collection, you need to first asses the amount of space in your closet versus free space behind your closet door. Next you need to decide on how often you’ll be using these purses, and if you want them to be within arm’s reach. If you want daily functionality and storage convenience, this idea is the best for your money and time.

2) More Than Just a Shoe Organizer

When we venture over to the home section for dorm closet organization at Target or Wal-Mart, we often think that organizers have only one use. A shoe organizer is just for shoes, and a hanger is just for clothes. But, when it comes to organizing, you have to get creative. In college, shoe organizers can be used for more than just shoes. They can hold cosmetics, under garments, cleaning supplies, feminine products, and even organize candy! If you have a lot of small or loose items that need a home, this is a great place to start.

3) No Dresser? No Problem!

Every college dorm is different. Some schools don’t offer dorms and only provide apartments to live in. No matter the living situation, we come to the same conclusion that we need stuff to put more stuff in. Furniture is expensive and sometimes Goodwill just doesn’t have what you’re looking for. In the meantime, you need a temporary dresser to hold your undergarments and socks. The best solution to this dorm closet organization dilemma is by using a hanging organizer with versatile drawers. You can interchange the drawers when the seasons change, and you no longer need those bikinis. Not to mention, the drawers come in different colors and patterns, so your closet can look organized and stylish!

4) Scarves Need A Stylish Organizer

What’s great about scarves is that they can be stylish in any season. Chiffon scarves are best to not store heat from our necks in the spring and summer, and cotton blend scarves are helpful to keep us warm in the fall and winter. Every scarf has its own pattern and functionality, but where do you put them all when you’re done? You could fold them and place them in your closet organizer. But, that would leave them all wrinkled and deflated. The best way to store a scarf is to let it hang in an area with plenty of vertical space. This dorm closet organization idea will not only provide a place to hold your scarves but add style while doing so.

5) We All Need A Mirror

Have you been blessed to receive a walk-in closet in your dorm? If not, don’t worry, this idea will work for you too. We all need to check ourselves out before heading out on our date, going to class, or getting ready for a night out with friends. But, where is the best place to put a mirror? For make-up purposes, it should be where the most natural light is. However, if you want a mirror in the most convenient place, the closet is best. You might ask yourself, “How will I even fit a mirror in my already small closet?” Well, if you have any open wall space you can use that, but if you’re not allowed to drill holes, then hang the mirror behind your closet door. Either way, when you need a quick glance at yourself before deciding on an outfit, you’ll be glad it’s there.

6) Got Wall Space?

Fashionistas that love their bangles, necklaces, and earrings will love this idea. Accessories are cherries on top of every outfit. They can accent our eye colors, act as the focal points to an outfit, or add charm (pun intended). But, accessories are small enough to misplace or lose completely. You’ve tried jewelry boxes or hanging organizers, but they just don’t work the way you want. To change things up, first find a large cork board and stylish picture frame to fit. Then, find enough wall space to hang the cork board, whether it’s in your dorm or in your closet. Once it’s all done, use tacks to hang your bangles and necklaces while sticking your earrings directly onto the cork. This a great way to display all of your jewelry while keeping track of them.
