6 Different Ways to Wear Liquid Eyeliner

As with every makeup product out there, there are multiple ways to apply a product. Liquid eyeliner is no exception. There are so many different ways to use it, some you may have never even considered before. Take a look at these six different ways to wear liquid eyeliner!

1.  The Wing

The first way to wear liquid eyeliner is the classic wing. Winged eyeliner is great worn alone, but can also be added to any eyeshadow look.  Winged liquid eyeliner makes any look sophisticated and sharp. The trick to applying liquid eyeliner into the perfect wing is to use a piece of tape that you place from the corner of your eye and towards the end of your eyebrow. Start by applying the liquid eyeliner on your upper lash line and along the tape. After you are done, remove the tape, and now you have a straight, crisp wing.  The classic winged liquid eyeliner look may take some practice to master, however it’s definitely worth it! This is liquid eyeliner look is the most popular on this list and can be altered in a variety of ways to make each time you wear it unique. Winged eyeliner is a great base for any look using liquid eyeliner and is a great structure to build off of.

2. Outer 3rd

This look is definitely my most used technique for liquid eyeliner, I call it the outer 3rd. Basically, all you’re doing is applying liquid eyeliner to the outer 3rd of your upper lash line. This creates the effect of fuller lashes by thickening the appearance of your lash line. It’s also a great way to blend the lash band of flash lashes. For all my small lash ladies out there, this is the trick you’ve been waiting for. I get so many compliments by the appearance of my eyelashes because they look longer with this liquid eyeliner technique.  The outer 3rd liquid eyeliner technique is perfect for any beginner first starting off with liquid eyeliner.  The outer 3rd look can also be replicated along the bottom lash line! Making both your top and bottom lashes appear thicker by simply adding liquid eyeliner.

3. Floating Liner

Floating liner seems to be one of the more viral ways to wear liquid eyeliner these days. It can be done in various ways and looks great in all colors. What makes this look “floating” liner is by placing it just above your natural crease in your eyelid.  So then it’s “floating” above your eye.  A unique touch to this look is by lining your lash line with black liquid eyeliner and then adding a pop of color to the floating aspect of the liner.  This liquid eyeliner look can almost mimic the concept of the cut crease eyeshadow technique without having to worry about the messiness of the eyeshadow. Floating liner is definitely a fun way to switch up your classic winged eyeliner look.  Try it with classic black, or even neon green as pictured below!

4. Faux Bottom Lashes

This is probably the way you never expected to use liquid eyeliner before, to create the appearance of false eyelashes on your lower lash line.  This was super popular back in the ’60s and ’70s and especially made popular by Twiggy, a supermodel at the time.  The trick is to lightly dash lines with liquid eyeliner across your lower lash line, making sure not to make them too thick, to create the appearance of thicker eyelashes.  While yes, this is definitely a more retro look, if the fashion of the ’60s and ’70s can make a comeback, so can the makeup trends.  I know that this look is definitely coming back with a vengeance. Faux bottom lashes look great on anyone and are definitely a great way to add a little something extra to your everyday makeup look.

5. The Cat Eye

So we’ve touched on the very classy winged liquid eyeliner look, now to make it a little more sultry by making it into cat liner.  In order to do this sultry look, all you do is apply your liner for a classic wing, but bring the liner all the way inwards to the inner corner of the eye and end it into a point.  The point draws the shape of the eye out and makes it appear elongated. Elongated eyes are seen to be one characteristic that sticks out to others. The shape that the overall liquid eyeliner creates makes for one sexy eye look.  This look is great alone or with a dark smokey eye, perfect for a night out with the girls, or date night with your significant other.  Frankly, it’s great to wear at home watching Netflix!  The cat-eye can be spruced up by changing the color of the liquid eyeliner as well. Try an olive green liquid liner!

6. The Rocker

Tagging along with the winged eyeliner look again, we now have what I like to call the rocker.  The rocker takes the winged liquid eyeliner look and not only thickens the liner but also smokes it out.  The easiest way to achieve this look is to start with a base winged liner look. You then make the base winged liquid eyeliner thicker, and when I say thick, I mean thiccccc.  After your wing is thick, you’re going to need some black eyeshadow. All you’re going to do is taking a small amount of black eyeshadow and slowly blend the harsh line out of the eyeliner. Now with this combination of eyeshadow and liquid eyeliner, you’ve created the rugged, rocker look.  This thick liner look can be done with or without the smokey effect and definitely looks great both ways. This rocker liquid eyeliner technique may bring back some memories for all my competitive dancers and figure skaters out there!
