How To Decorate Your Dorm Room On A Budget

Going to college is expensive and there is no reason you should spend hundreds on dorm decor when you can just be creative! Everyone wants their dorm room to feel like home, but many colleges have restrictions in place that don’t allow you to decorate as much as you hoped. Whether you’re just moving in to college or you want to completely change your room, here is a list of different ways to decorate your dorm room on a budget!

Use Pictures

Nothing makes your dorm room feel more like home than having pictures all around you. An easy way to hang photos is by buying string, clothespins, and Command hooks. You can get all of these at a local craft store or Amazon. It takes up no desk space and is easy wall decor.

Posters/ Wall Art

If you want more than just pictures, you can hang posters or wall art. You can find posters just about anywhere, including your favorite magazines or from a local bookstore. Amazon has a lot of really cute and affordable wall art with all different sayings, quotes, and images!

Tapestries

Another thing to hang on the walls is tapestry. These take up an entire wall which is nice if you hate the color of your dorm walls. Some colleges don’t allow them, but if yours does, I recommend getting one. They have so many choices and they can really bring a room together.

Jewelry Holder

Jewelry is an accessory to your outfit, but it can also be an accessory to your dorm. Using a jewelry tree allows you to keep your jewelry organized while also adding a cute enhancement to your desk.

Storage Bins

There isn’t much space in a college dorm room, so buying storage bins is a must. You can decorate them yourself or buy some pretty ones to go along with your dorm decor. Storage bins are an easy way to decorate your dorm room on a budget!

String Lights

Adding Christmas lights or lanterns to your room can really brighten it up (pun intended). Hanging them all around your walls or off your desk can give your room a nice effect. You can also hang them with your pictures using clothes pins.

Battery Tealights

Using battery powered tea lights as fake candles is really pretty and a fun DIY. Colleges usually don’t allow candles, so you can buy a package of the battery tealights and mason jars to create your own realistic candle. You can also just leave them out by themselves for a simple look.

Throw Rugs

College rooms aren’t usually carpeted, but adding a throw rug can add both decoration and comfort. Get a fur throw rug for a really chic look!

Throw Pillows

I recommend buying simple bedding with a neutral color and adding colorful/patterned throw pillows. Don’t be afraid to mix and match and going really crazy with the pillows. You can never have enough, am I right?

Washi Tape

Washi Tape is by far the best investment for decorating your dorm. It comes in every color and pattern imaginable. It is easily removable and can go on the walls without causing damage. You can decorate picture frames, clear storage bins, lamps, mirrors and anything else you can think of!
