Curly Hair Tips for the College Girl

Ladies, you are all beautiful. Even with your crazy, uncontrollable manes. That being said, having curly hair isn’t a bad thing, and you shouldn’t hate it. I have thick, brown curly hair and I embrace it. I wear my hair curly most of the time. Some of you are thinking, “Why on earth would you do that? How could you let your hair go free?!?!” The simple answer is that it is healthy for you. If you have curly hair like me, then you know straightening your hair takes a long time and a lot of heat. It damages your hair, it fries it and dries it out. Every hair dresser I have ever had has told me countless times to avoid this type of heat. During high school, I would straighten my hair every day before school, sometimes even in the evening before bed and then straighten it again in the morning. It destroyed my luscious locks. I had horrible split ends and my hair thinned out. After high school graduation, I stopped using the straightener. Yes I still blow dried my hair every day after my shower, but otherwise kept it heat-free.

Today, I am in my junior year of college and my hair is healthy and full again. I hardly ever blow dry it fully, and I only straighten it about once a week, if that. Now let me give you five curly hair tips on how to deal with your messy, glorious mane.

1. Beach Wave Spray is your best friend.

After the shower, squeeze all the water out of your hair with a towel. I usually wrap my hair in the towel and let it soak up most of the moisture for about five to ten minutes. When your hair is damp, let it down and part it where you prefer (if you part it), and comb through the tangles (yes, I know some of you curly-haired babes have to skip this step). Then take your beach wave spray and spritz and scrunch every section, then allow it to air dry. The beach wave spray will help “contain” your hair so it’s not as frizzy and unmanageable. Wearing my hair down and natural like this has gotten me tons of compliments. Let me tell you ladies, natural is better.

2. Get into the habit of wearing your hair half up.

I absolutely love this hairstyle! It keeps the curls out of my face and it keeps me cool (especially when I have to walk twelve miles from my car to campus). It is my go to style for class. It is also super cute!

3. Headbands.

Recently I got addicted to buying headbands and wearing them to class and to work. You can do a lot with headbands, such as wearing one with a messy bun, wearing one with the half up style, etc. Headbands are easy to put on, and can keep your hair in place all day. No more culy Q’s smacking me in the eye!

4. The messy bun.

Cute, messy, and the perfect go-to style whenever you are on the run. I usually sport a messy bun for work and it’s another great option for class. I usually wear earrings when I do the messy bun, mainly because the earrings won’t get lost in my hair and having the extra glamour helps balance out the casual look of the bun.

5. Love yourself and learn to love your hair.

You are unique and your hair is unique. Don’t damage or hide your hair because of that. Being unique is a good thing! The reason why I straightened my hair everyday was because I wanted to fit in and be like all the other girls with straight, smooth hair. But not anymore. Love yourself, and be yourself.
