Crochet Projects For This Winter

It’s that time for the weather to start cooling down and for cardigans to come out of hiding. If you want to be crafty and prepare for that cold weather, here are some fun crocheted projects that you make to keep yourself and your friends warm for fall and winter.

If you are experienced at crocheting or just starting out, these below are great projects to try out for yourself! These five projects, most with linked videos for following along, are good for beginners. You mainly need to know some basic crochet stitches.

1. Harry Styles Patchwork Cardigan

When Harry Styles wore the crocheted cardigan on stage, it inspired people to create it for themselves, and now you can make your own Harry Styles Cardigan. Styles wore the JW Anderson cardigan, which initially was over $1,500.

For this project, you’ll need:

6mm Crocheted Hook

Darning Needle

Six Buttons

Red Heart Medium Worsted Acrylic Yarm:

  • 3 Skeins of Burgandy
  • 2 Skeins if Black
  • 1 Skein of Carrot
  • 1 Skein of Paddy Green
  • 1 Skein of Lemon (or Lion Brand to get closer)
  • 1 Skein of Pool (or Lion Brand)

The patches are around 5″x5″

Once you have all of your materials ready and you feel prepared to throw yourself into the work, it’s time to get crocheting!

Here is a YouTube video from Kirrilalia on how to crochet this cardigan! Good luck.

2. Pastel Cardigan with Flowers

This adorable cardigan is great to wear this winter and is so much fun. You can use your preferred, chunky, or smaller, soft baby yarn.

It is essential to note the smaller the yarn, the longer it will take to create your project.

What you’ll need:

Yarn (decide if you want baby yarn, acrylic yarn, or chunky yarn.) If you choose chunky or smaller yarn, be sure the pattern you follow is substituting for that.

Crochet hook (any size that matches your yarn)

Scissors

Stitch Markers or bobby pins

If you follow this youtube video by Lala Perez, she uses the super saver yarn (you need three colors).

You need a color for the base color, the majority of your cardigan, and two colors for your flowers.

If you want to experiment with this cardigan, you can also look up other shapes to make and sew on if you don’t want the flowers. There are countless possibilities with beautiful results.

3. Crocheted Puff Quilt

This is a great project for your scrap yarn leftover from previous material, or you can buy new yarn for this to have the colors you want.

What you’ll need:

Worsted/Medium Yarn

5mm Crochet hook, or the size to match your yarn

Polyfil Stuffing

Yarn Needle

Scissors

Measuring Tape

Once you have your materials, all that is left is to start crocheting your squares! The image below is 3″x3″ squares. This is a fun project you can do while relaxing because you repeat the same process to crochet all of your squares instead of reading a complicated pattern.

Here is a video from Sass & Stitch on creating a square and blanket!

4. Patchwork Blanket

This blanket is similar to the previous project, where you can use scraps to create it! This can also be a knitting project because you only need to make squares; it is up to whichever style you prefer.

For this project, you will need:
Yarn

Crochet hook (that fits the yarn)

Yarn needle

Once you have your supplies, you are ready to go! You will start by crocheting squares, and you’ll need to make many of them depending on how big you want your blanket.

You will need to know how to half-double crochet for this project and create a square as big as you’d like. You will need to create the rest of the squares the same, so you can get the same size.

When you have the amount of desired squares, and they all create a blanket to the size you want, you can now start by placing them in the order you want. Lay them out on your bed or the ground to see what order you want your colors. If you picked out a color theme, you could organize it thinking of that, or you can have random colors you like.

Now, when you like how your blanket looks, you need to slip stitch your squares together or sew them with more yarn. You finish it by weaving in the ends.

5. Hand Crochet Chunky Blanket

For this project, you do not need anything except for chunky yarn and your hands. You will need around 5 to 6 skeins of your chosen yarn, and now you can get comfortable, pick your favorite movie, and get to hand-crocheting.

This became a popular trend during the Covid-2020 quarantine on Tiktok and Pinterest and is still popular! These blankets are cozy, beautiful, and so warm.

Here is a simple video by Do It On A Dime on YouTube.

Creating something and wearing it or using it to stay warm is so much fun. It is a proud moment when someone asks you, “where did you get that?” That is definitely a moment to be able to brag on the hard work you put into your cardigan or blanket and shoot back, “I made it!”

These projects are even great for winter holiday gifts or birthday gifts, and you can be happy knowing that they will keep your loved warm and cozy for the cold weather.

Or, if you want to share this with others, you can start selling them on the side! Who doesn’t love a little side hustle?

You can set up a table at a craft fair or start an Etsy shop, where hundreds of people shop for handmade products daily.

When you have perfected your craft and found something you genuinely enjoy creating, it is exciting to be able to share that with the people around you.

Out of these five projects, which one are you going to try first? Do you have any projects you want to share with beginners? Let us know in the comments below!
