What’s your first thought when you hear the words “watching paint dry”?
Boring, right?
Well, that’s how it can be staring at the blank walls of an empty dorm room. Having no dorm wall decor can completely ruin your thought process and means of creativity, essentially having your mind go blank when it’s time for some critical thinking.
Ok – bad joke, I know.
But really, how do you expect to effectively pull out your imaginative side and get those creative juices flowing with nothing to pull inspiration from? Get something up on those walls! Here are some perfect ideas for dorm wall decor:
No matter the mood, this addition is the first step toward making things lit – again, bad joke, I know – in your dorm.
If you envision more of a modern and electric feel for your room, LED lights are definitely the way to go. Depending on your budget, you can find a strip of these lights ranging anywhere from 6 to 32 feet, varying in any color imaginable. Most of the more expensive options are also enabled with Wi-Fi, allowing you to control the colors and their patterns with an app on your phone.
Or is it a more subtle, cozy vibe you want? String lighting is your answer. With an extreme sense of flexibility, these lights are usually bound to a wire and can be placed essentially anywhere, giving you the option of choosing whether or not you want them to serve as your room’s main light source. Most are battery operated and some include a timer. Although there aren’t as many colors to choose from in comparison to LED strips, string lights are much easier on the pockets.
What better way to show off your interest in that cool underground band you’ve been listening to for the last six months than a good old-fashioned poster?
Adding these to your wall provides an easy, yet effective method of displaying and expressing your personality. It gives you the opportunity to say “Here. This is me. This is who I am and what I represent,” without physically having to say a word. Posters also vary in shapes and sizes, so if you’re dedicated enough to buy one that’s big and bold, you’ve just taken a giant step closer toward completing your dorm wall decor considering the amount of wall space it’ll consume.
Convenient. Space-saver. Your own personal movie theater. The list of positives to having a projector is endless. To keep things short and sweet, we’ll just name two of the utmost importance.
Functionality – Dorm rooms aren’t necessarily cute by nature, and the space constraint could limit where a television may fit. You may need a T.V. stand or dresser to comfortably watch at eye-level, which constitutes a need of more floor space. Instead, just grab a projector and point it at any space free of your already established dorm wall decor. Once you then settle in and feel satisfied with the amount of episodes you’ve binge-watched for the day, just hit the power button and boom; back to being a regular wall. It’s like it never even happened.
Design – When it comes to the enjoyment of watching T.V. or playing video games, the size of the screen is a concerning factor. “The bigger, the better” is usually the concept, and well, a projector is just about the best things can get in that regard. Most projectors are capable of displaying screens upward of 300 inches without distortion or loss of image quality.
Similar to posters but a bit more personal to you, photo collages can potentially serve more than one purpose.
On one hand, they’re a great decorative piece, providing your guests with a little glimpse into your life as they’re already admiring how well you’ve put your room together (assuming you’ve already executed our first 3 ideas above). On the other hand, photo collages can serve as a way to save memories throughout your college career.
Capturing moments from freshman to senior year not only gives you the satisfaction of watching your collage grow as time goes on, but it also allows you to reflect years down the line and reminisce on all of the exciting times you’ve had.
Starting with nothing but the blank canvas of a dorm room can be intimidating.
But you don’t have to be super artsy or the ultimate creative to have an inviting dorm room you’re comfortable in. Dorm wall decor can be simply and easy – it’s all about personal taste and what you make of it.
Remember there are no rules. Take it piece by piece and add what you feel fits you. And feel free to steal some of the ideas provided above!
