Barbeques are great! The food is always so tasty, especially in the summer with the fresh corn, strawberries and homemade lemonade. But it’s pretty common for the conversation to get as dried up as the grass you’re all standing on. It always sucks when you’re standing around waiting for the “dad” of the party to finish grilling and you’ve already made your way around the barbeque to have small talk. It’s even worse when you decide to take a time out from socializing so you pop a squat in the shade and then someone you’ve met a total of three times sit directly across from you. I’m sure we’ve all been in this particular situation, so here are 15 convo starters for all of us awkward barbeque-goers.
Vine is gone but definitely not forgotten. Millenials can literally talk about Vines all day and night. Just throw around some of your favorite 6-second quotes and in no time at all, you’ll be hunched over a Vine compilation like you’ve been friends for years! C’mon, you know this is one of the best convo starters!
This is great if your stuck talking to a dude because that’s all anyone has been talking about lately. By just asking their opinion about sports you probably can just sit back and listen for at least 15 minutes while they ramble on about how Croatia got cheated from victory.
When all else fails, talk about tv. Everyone has a couple of shows that they could go on and on about for hours. Hopefully, you find someone who has the same obsession as you and you can dish about the characters!
I don’t know about you, but I love to hate people. Finding someone who you can gossip and joke around with at a party is a dream come true. Just try to keep everything kind-hearted and be quiet so no one overhears you judging Kathy’s disgusting homemade potato salad. This is one of the funniest convo starters!
Just like tv, everyone loves talking about movies. Especially if you find someone who’s a movie buff at the barbeque then you’re set! Make sure to bring up controversial movies that maybe you hated but everyone else loved. A nice debate always makes time go by faster.
The things that float around people’s heads throughout the day is hilarious. Like you’d never know that the person sitting next to you knows everything about horses. At the very least, you could learn something new!
This is a classic icebreaker, but for good reason. It’s funny because people’s answers range from cell phone to boat to matches to their cat. This is another good debate topic because you can argue about what the right answer is. Although it’s a classic, it is still one of the best convo starters!
Asking people what they do is so basic. Instead, ask them something more specific about their work. That way, you’ll probably figure out what they do but you’ll also learn something more intimate about the person.
Whether they actually think that Stevie Wonder can see or they wholeheartedly believe everything, this is a fun topic.
I think which social media is someone’s favorite says a lot about them. If they like Instagram, they’re probably more creative. If they like Twitter, they’re probably spontaneous. If they like Facebook, they’re probably over the age of 45.
Music is always a safe conversation topic. There aren’t really a lot of controversial routes you can go down when it comes to music, so if you’re at a family barbeque this is a good idea! It’s also interesting to compare which bands you have and haven’t seen.
This is a great convo starter because more likely than not there’ll be hot dogs at your barbeque. This is a great topic to bring up while you’re all sitting around eating because it’ll heat up the meal with a big debate! This is one of the most interesting convo starters for sure!
There’s definitely a right answer to this question. Teleportation (duh!!!). But, hearing someone’s reasoning for why they’d want to invisibility is always funny.
I think these hot topics are always a good idea. While you might end the conversation hating the other person, you’ll definitely have fun arguing in the meantime!
If you could time travel without disturbing the space-time continuum which would you do?? IDK man. It’s really hard to decide personally. I think if I had to pick I’d say the past because the future is scary and I don’t want to see the long-term effects of our current presidency.
