5 Common Reasons Why Your Period Can Be Late

You know there are several reasons your period could be late aside from being pregnant, right? If not, you’re about to get the scoop on common reasons why your period can be late. There are roughly 5 solid reasons this could be the case.

Stress is one of the most common reasons why your period could be late. If a big event happens in your life, it can cause something called hypothalamic amenorrhea. Sounds fancy right? Just means your period stops for a while. Anyways! A lot of the hormones for your period are created in the hypothalamus, so if any life changing even is going on, it could cause a late or missed period. No sweat, you aren’t pregnant.. or you could be.

1. Weight Loss or Excessive Exercise

This is another very common reason for a missed period. If you have a BMI that rapidly dips below 18 or 19 you can miss your period. BMI simply stands for body mass index. Other conditions like bulimia and anorexia can halt your period too. On the other hand, training for a marathon or increasing your exercise intake can have the same effects. This is one of the more popular reasons why your period can be late. Doctors document how frequently they see this occur.

2. Your Birth Control

Your birth control regulates your period. Sometimes a missed or late period is just a byproduct of the pill. Low-dose pills can cause you to miss a period. Even methods like IUDs, implants or shots can stall your period from occurring for a few months. Usually it just resumes without issue.

3. Medication

Hormonal contraceptives can fuck up your cycle. Other medications can alter your period cycle as well. Antidepressants and some antipsychotics, corticosteroids and chemotherapy drugs are known for suppressing your monthly period. If you’ve recently gone off the pill, you may notice it takes about a month for your cycle to start regulating itself; a miser period can just be your body trying to get back on track.

4. Hormonal Imbalance

If you were a Pretty Little Liars fan you probably have heard of this medical condition by now: Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). PLL star Sasha Pieterse, now on Dancing With The Stars, has opened up about her condition. In addition to missing a period, or just having irregular ones at that, PCOS can cause acne, weight gain and possible infertility. If you think you have PCOS you can go to a doctor and they can test your hormone levels.

5. Change In Schedule

Believe it or not but changing up your schedule can affect your menstruation cycle. Travelling or even switching from a day to a night shift can alter when your period comes.
