For a lot of people, their hair is a big deal. There are a lot of claims floating around about what is good and what is bad for your luscious locks, but how do you know what to believe? To clear up any confusion, take a look at these common myths about hair and what the truth is behind them!
1. Plucking gray hairs will make them grow back in multiples
You may be relieved to know that this hair gossip is false! Plucking gray hairs will not make them grow back in twos. However, they will grow back with a vengeance. Plucking a hair causes a lot of stress on the hair follicle which in turn causes courser hair regrowth and an altered growth pattern. It only appears as though that single hair came back with friends. This is one of the most common myths about hair!
2. Cutting your hair regularly will make it grow faster
It would be ideal if every hair cut boosted hair growth. Cutting hair does not speed up the growing process but it does assist with healthier hair. Split ends tend to work their way up the hair shaft and cause breakage. By getting regularly scheduled hair cuts, split ends are kept under control and you maintain a healthier mane, giving the illusion that your hair is growing faster because it is no longer snapping off. This hair myth is false!
3. Rinsing your hair with cold water will improve its shine
Those cold rinses are nothing short of uncomfortable. The good thing is that you no longer have to incorporate it in your beauty regimen for the sole purpose of making your hair shine as water temperature has no impact in that aspect. Myth busted! However, you may still want to continue with the cooler treatments if your locks are color treated. Warmer water temperatures cause the hair cuticle to open, allowing color to bleed while cooler temperatures have less of that effect.
4. Your hair grows faster in the summer
This myth actually holds truth! Yes, your hair does grow faster in the summer than winter. This rapid growth is due to changes in blood flow. During winter, blood flow is diverted towards the main organs so that the body can maintain its necessary temperature. Once the weather warms up, circulation enhances, boosting the growing process of your hair.
5. Dandruff is a sure sign of a dry scalp
This myth is a partial truth. Dandruff can be caused by a dry scalp, but it is not the most common reason for dandruff to make an appearance. Usually, an oily scalp is the issue as it causes scaly patches that turn into flakes and eventually fall off. This is one of the common myths about hair that everyone has heard!
6. Longer hair will hide your thinning hair
Unless you can rock a stylish combover, this is a myth that you should not believe. Longer hair makes it more noticeable that your hair is thinning or that you are experiencing baldness due to the contrast in fullness. It is better to cut your hair in a way that the sides of your hair show an equal or lesser amount of hair in comparison to the top. This will provide balance to the overall look of your hair allowing you to feel more confident while wearing less hats.
7. Maximum suds equals maximum cleanliness
False! The amount of suds that your shampoo produces does not indicate a specific level of clean. Actually, suds indicate the presence of detergents that are damaging to your hair due to the excessive stripping of oils. This is one of the common myths about hair that is not as commonly known!
8. 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioners are a great time and money saver
You can definitely save time and money using such products but they are not the best option for your hair. The purpose of shampoo is to cleanse and the purpose of conditioner is to…well…condition. When you put them both in a bottle, the hair certainly gets clean, but the conditioning component is pretty much canceled out which can cause your hair to feel less than luxe.
