Any adult Disney fan is bound to get mixed reactions from others. Not everyone subscribes to the Disney magic. In these instances, sometimes people feel a need to express to you why they aren’t fans or they try to convince you why you should erase Mickey Mouse from your life. For those of us who remain in the Magic Kingdom, here are 10 comments you get as an adult Disney fan.
As with most questions, there are two ways this is expressed. Sometimes friends will genuinely inquire about why you are a Disney fan. They want to hear about movie favorites, amusement park trips, or about your latest purchase from the Disney store. On the other hand, new friends tend to ask this question as a judgment. It is unfathomable why an adult would still be into Disney and they are only asking to get you to second guess yourself. Either way, show your true colors and state why you’re an adult Disney fan!
In case you have forgotten, we were all once kids and continuing to have an affinity for something from your childhood is not uncommon. There are many different hobbies or areas that people grow out of while other things become a lifelong source of enjoyment. Being a sports fan for a certain team all your life is no different than being a Disney fan. Yes, the target audience is younger individuals, but this just means you can pass on the legacy to your Disney family!
Usually followed by an eyeroll, this comment ends the conversation instantly. The other person does not want to hear about Disney and you probably won’t bring it up in conversation ever again. This is one of the most disheartening comments because it makes you feel like your interests aren’t valuable. You’re allowed to not like something, but this doesn’t mean you should make someone else feel bad for it. If you’re an adult Disney fan, be proud of it no matter what anyone else thinks.
Aren’t all Star Wars movies the same? This has the same ridiculous sentiment. There are a variety of emotions present in all Disney films and the fun is in the adventure. Maybe you don’t like the good vs. evil plots but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t something special about each film. If you give Disney a chance, you might find even one movie that resonates with you in a way that nothing else has.
You are entitled to your opinion. If you are an adult Disney fan, that doesn’t mean that you don’t like anything else! You can have favorite Disney foods right up there with gourmet restaurants, you aren’t limited to this one arena. Everyone has different tastes and if Disney isn’t for your palette, that’s okay with me!
However well-meaning this comment may be, it still comes off condescending. I don’t want to be equated with your child and made to seem like I don’t know any better. I’m pretty sure we are not going to be hanging out and how is this somehow shared interest going to bring us adults any closer? I am all for supporting family friendly activities, but I am an adult Disney fan and that should not be downgraded.
As an adult Disney fan, that is not a requirement that you have to be a super fan for everything Disney comes out with. You can be selective in movies, rides, and characters you like. I can be a fan of the Disney princesses but still get annoyed with Let It Go, there are no set rules. Assuming that you are a fan of everything makes the specifics get glossed over and your individuality disappears.
Well you’ve seen the Disneyland water bottle I use every day, apparently not! Your preferences are not something for you to get over and no one else should have a say in those type of decisions. Maybe you will grow out trips to Disneyland and maybe you won’t but it’s your choice!
This comment tends to come up when discussing vacation plans and it makes your travels seem limited. If I don’t explicitly say I’m going to a Disney park, doesn’t that mean I’ve decided to go somewhere else this year? There really is no purpose in asking why Disney is not a part of the plan because as stated earlier, you have a plethora of interests!
One of the comments that is always met with gratitude as an adult Disney fan. When you discuss your interests, it means the world when you get a gift that reflects those talks or even a text with a photo of a Disney pen that says this reminded me of you. It shows that the other person was listening to you and appreciates what you’re into.
