College Preparation: Everything There Is To Know

College is often referred to as being the best four years of your life. You hear about the memories made, lifelong relationships and long nights of partying. Constantly hearing that narrative would have you more than ready for school! I mean, who wouldn’t be? Unfortunately, though, college is much more than the glitz and glamour you might see on TV or hear about from your older siblings. College preparation and execution will be detrimental to your overall experience, so you want to make sure those are two things you’re on top of. Luckily, you just so happen to be in the right place at the right time. Implement these college preparation tips and you’ll be more ready than you’ll ever be!

1. Master Time Management

This is the first and most fundamental step of college preparation. Developing the ability to stay on schedule and spend your time wisely will be more useful than you’ll ever believe during your college career.
You’ll be faced with temptation and distractions just about every day; friends, parties, restaurants, dates, you name it. If you neglect or fail to have your duties and responsibilities planned out (at least to a certain extent), it’ll be easy to stumble and fall behind. And believe me, that’s not what you want at all. Catching up in college is not as easy to do by any means.

2. Save Your Money

This step of college preparation isn’t completely necessary, but it definitely helps a lot. I believe it’s safe to say plenty of students can relate when I mention the “broke college student” stereotype, and for good reason, too. College is essentially a transitional period; old enough to live on our own but not quite experienced enough to work in your career field (for some). To assume we’re all financially stable just wouldn’t be right.
With that said, saving money beforehand puts you ahead of the game when it comes to college preparation. You’ll be exposed to luxuries not all students have. Books and supplies won’t be an issue, you can buy food at your leisure, and most importantly, you can pay people to do your homework. (Just kidding)
In all seriousness though, always expect the unexpected in college. If you decide to save up beforehand, you’ll be greatly appreciative.

3. Attend Orientation

Orientation will put you on the right track and set you up for success when it comes to college preparation. You’ll get the chance to get a feel for your campus and what it has to offer, as well as where everything is located. This will save you from walking around looking lost trying to figure out where English 1101 is on the first day of class.
If by any chance you aren’t able to make it to orientation, get in contact with your academic advisor and they should be able to guide you in the right direction. If you’re having trouble creating a cohesive class schedule, they’ll be able to assist you with that, too.

4. Align Yourself With Those In Your Major

Networking is a must in college, and the earlier you start, the better off you’ll be. The advantages may seem minuscule when you’re first entering college, but trust me, the opportunities those relationships can bring you down the line is priceless.
Thankfully, we’re in the day and age where social media easily allows us to get in touch with just about anybody. A quick Facebook, Instagram or Twitter search of your school and major will put you right where you need to be.
At the end of the day, it’s all about balance. Work hard, play hard. Get your stuff done so you won’t feel guilty when it’s 4 a.m. on a weekday and you still haven’t left the kickback. Just remember the five p’s: proper (college) preparation prevents poor performance. Live by that motto and you’ll do fine!
