So, why choose to go on a Ghost Tour? Well, while walking through a regular haunted house can be entertaining, it can oftentimes scare people off before they even enter. A reason for this is because you’re usually all alone as you make your way through the house. Not so with a ghost tour. If you attend this unique experience, you’ll be with a group of people the entire time. However, the trade off to this benefit is that what you’ll be guided through is not fake or set up for the Halloween season. This is a real haunted house. Below are listed a collection of the best ghost tours in the country Each offers and unforgettable experience.
Located in Traverse City, MI, the Twilight Tour takes guests on a trip through the former Traverse City State Hospital. Spooky! The asylum, once a prominent hospital for the deranged, was closed in 1989 and slowly fell into decay. What better spot to have a Ghost Tour, right? This 90 minute tour will take you through the grounds around the hospital before entering the many tall, white buildings which surround them. Upon entering the hospital, the tour guide will lead the group through the newly renovated hallways. Peer into the rooms where the troubled patients used to spend their time. As an added treat, the guide will read first hand accounts of some employees who used to work there. By far, the coolest part of this tour is the journey into the dark tunnels beneath the hospital. Don’t get lost!
The tour of the Dunkirk Lighthouse is New York is a bit more mild than the Twilight Tour, but still just as fun. The military artifacts from the destructive wars of the 20th century are said to be the cause of the supernatural occurrences at the lighthouse. Sometimes, there are even reports that the restless spirits of the previous lighthouse keepers are seen in and around the building. Groups will have the opportunity to take part in a variety of activities during the ghost tour, starting with an actual tour of the lighthouse (with plenty of lights for visibility). After the tour the guides, along with some special guests, will discuss the haunted history of the lighthouse and present some evidence of actual ghost sightings! Before the end, everyone will even have an opportunity to participate in an interactive paranormal investigation. Who knows, maybe you’ll be the one to find further proof of supernatural activity!
The Haunted Boston Ghost Tour is by far my favorite on this list. Where the typical ghost tour, while fun, is designed to show you around a historical sight with some scary history thrown in, this tour is a perfect combination of history and entertainment. Five different tours are offered, from the famous Boston Common to a walk through the city’s ancient burial grounds. These tours, while providing a huge amount of Boston’s history are, as previously stated, also include exciting elements that you’d find in a haunted house: jump-scares! Your guides to the many haunted locations will periodically try to frighten you, but it’s all part of the fun! As you learn about the history surrounding your chosen tour, watch out! The long dead inhabitants of these areas are summoned by the tours, and they do not like visitors!
If you happen to be down in Key West, then you owe it to yourself to check out the Ghosts and Gravestones tour. Climb aboard the Trolley of the Doomed driven by a collection of ghastly ghouls–the Ghost Host–as you journey to the sights of beautiful Key West’s most disgusting villains. Guests on this ghost tour will have a choice of a few different spooky experiences, all offering great and varied experiences. One option, ‘Most Infamous Ghosts’, is about–you guessed it–the top spectres who make Key West their home. As you head out on these tours led by a collection of eccentric guides, you’ll learn about the Hurricane of 1846 which claimed the lives of many families, or listen to the story of Captain Tony and his terrible saloon. Just remember to keep your arms and legs inside the vehicle at all times, lest you be dragged out by the spirits of the lost.
Looking for a (relatively) calm ghost tour? Well, look no further, because the San Antonio Ghost Tour is just what you’re after. Participants in the tour are taken to several spooky locations (all within a mile of each other) where expert storytellers bring the twisted stories to life. As an added bonus, everyone is given ghost hunting equipment during the tour, so you may get the chance to see an actual ghost! If you have a question about any haunted destination in the city, even one that’s not on the tour, just ask your guide. They’re experts on the stuff!
Wander through a huge collection of spooky and disturbing memorabilia in Spooked in Seattle’s Death Museum. Attendants will walk guests through an old underground passage on their way to an undead funeral with cloaked skeletons who stare as you pass by. Glance into the coffins with their disturbing inhabitants if you dare. For some comic relief on the tour, look for the tombstones with cheesy names (Yul B. Next). After completing your circuit of the museum, take a much needed break at the bar where you can relax and listen to the guide talk about the history of each haunted object you saw.
The self-proclaimed “High Definition Haunted Experience” in Philadelphia earns the name by taking groups to over 20 different haunted sites throughout the city, making this the biggest single Ghost Tour on our list. On the tour, the guide will capture your attention with both facts and folklore that will frighten and fascinate you. Interested in the life of the master of horror, Edgar Allen Poe? Listen as your guide tells of Poe’s exploits while living in Philadelphia. Movie buffs will also love this tour, as the group is taken to the sets of some famous horror films, including The Sixth Sense and Shooter.
