Coffee is a tasty drink that can give you an extra boost of energy in the morning before work and/or school. It’s also great for an afternoon pick-me-up! There are so many different kinds of coffee roasts and ways to make the coffee drink from the roasted beans.
It can get a little confusing deciding which type of coffee you’d like in your cup, so that’s why I’ve created this little guide that goes over the different types of roasts and a few of the basic ways to get your delicious cup of coffee whenever you’d like!
Coffee beans that are roasted lightly are usually lighter in color and have a more mild flavor. This roast is for you if you don’t really like a bold and bitter tasting cup of coffee!
Because light roasts are roasted very lightly, their flavor and scent are very original to the coffee bean before it was roasted. It won’t lose that original coffee bean taste like the dark roasted beans do! Lightly roasted beans go great with a touch of cream and sugar or even without anything at all.
Medium roast beans have a stronger flavor than the light roast beans, but still not the bitter roasted flavor of the dark roast coffee beans. This roast is generally preferred in the United States and that’s why it’s sometimes referred to as an American Roast.
This roast is a good place to start if you’re just beginning to get into coffee! It’s pretty neutral so see if you like it and then decide if you want less (light roast) or more (darker roasts).
Medium-dark roast coffee beans have a slight bittersweet after taste! The beans are darker in color than the medium roasted beans and you’ll start to pick up the toasty flavor from the roasting process when you sip this coffee.
Dark roasted coffee beans are the boldest of the bunch! The original coffee bean flavor is lost to the roasting process and it has a strong bitterness to it. This coffee is delicious made with a French Press because it makes a flavorful cup of coffee that absorbs a lot of flavors from the dark roast.
One common way to get your perfect cup of coffee is to use a French Press. This method takes a little longer than other methods, but it’s totally worth it for the amazing and well-rounded flavor you’ll get.
First, you’ll put your ground beans of choice in the French Press with hot water and let it sit for around 5 minutes. Then you’ll press the little plunger down to separate the final drink from the coffee grounds.
This method will absorb a lot of flavors from the roasted beans and will deliver a full and almost thick cup of delicious coffee!
Another way you can get a tasty cup of coffee is by using the filtered or drip method. This is whenever you’re placing your coffee grounds into a filter and then pouring hot water over it slowly as the coffee drips down into a carafe. You can do this with a Chemex Coffeemaker or an off brand you can find on Amazon!
This doesn’t absorb all the flavors that the French Press method does, but it’s still super delicious. This will give you a lighter cup of coffee that tastes amazing!
If you’d prefer a cooler pick-me-up drink, then pick your favored roast and method of coffee making and then throw the coffee into the fridge for a couple hours! Add some ice and you can enjoy a delicious cup of iced coffee instead of a toasty warm one.
Whether you have your coffee hot or iced you can add your favorite flavors of creamer and a dash of sugar if you’d like. You could even have a touch of almond or coconut milk if you’d like to stay dairy free!
If you’d prefer your coffee to be more natural, then don’t add anything to it. This actually tastes pretty great once you get used to it and it has fewer calories than coffee with creamer in it!
