As tempting as it may be to just eat at the dining hall for every meal, especially since you’re paying for a meal card, that’s not necessarily the healthiest thing to do. Plus, on those lazy days, you don’t want to have to get out of bed and walk all the way to the dining hall. That is why it’s important that you go grocery shopping so you have some food in your room. Not everything is very cheap, though, so we have compiled a cheap grocery list for you of some of the cheapest food you can get at the grocery store.
Not only is this product cheap, but it is also super quick and easy to make. Just add some water, heat it in the microwave for a minute, and you’re done! This makes for the perfect on-the-go breakfast when you’re running out the door for your 8 a.m. class.
These are usually cheaper to buy than the full boxes of cereal and they can easily be taken on-the-go. However, if you plan on buying them in bulk, I recommend just buying a regular box of cereal since that will then be cheaper.
Ramen is a staple for every college student. They are ridiculously cheap to buy and very easy to make. Stock up on these and you’ll have lunch or dinner ready for you for a while.
These are similar to ramen noodles – cheap and easy to make. Simply add some water, heat it in the microwave for about three minutes, and you’re good to go! These make for the perfect lunch if you don’t have much time between classes, or even for dinner when you’re just looking to come back to your room and relax after a long day of classes. This is one of the classic college dinners on our cheap grocery list.
These are great to have to just throw in your backpack. This way you will always have a snack with you for the times when you just have no time to spare in between classes. Bonus: most of them are usually pretty healthy, too.
You can’t go wrong with frozen meals, whether it’s pizza, wings, or TV dinners. They can just sit in your fridge and they’ll be there whenever you are ready to eat them. Just plop them in the microwave or oven for a little while and you’ve got yourself a meal.
Bananas are among the cheapest fruit you can buy, and they’re really good for you, too. You can take them on-the-go for breakfast, take it along with you in your bag for a snack, use them for smoothies, the possibilities are endless.
This is a great healthy option for your cheap grocery list. If you want to buy fruit, it’s best to buy whatever fruit is in season at the time you buy because in season fruit will always be cheaper then fruit that is not in season. For example, if it’s during the fall, apples, pumpkin, pomegranates, and more are in season and will be cheaper than trying to buy at any other time of the year. If you are unsure what fruit is in season when, a simple Google search will give you all the answers.
Popcorn is a pretty healthy snack to have (as long as it’s not doused in butter) and it’s affordable, as well. Popcorn is on the cheap grocery list because it’s great to have for late night snacking for either just yourself or to share with your roommate(s) if you want to watch a movie together.
Bread is very cheap to buy and so many things can be done with bread – toast, bagels, sandwiches, etc. You can make your own sandwiches if you have time in your schedule to come back to your room and make one, or you can buy bagels that you can take with you on-the-go.
Chicken is the cheapest meat you can buy and it’s pretty healthy, too. You can grab some chicken breast if you have the means to cook it, or grocery stores also sell pre-cut and cooked chicken strips that you can use for pretty much anything you want.
Potatoes are also extremely cheap to buy and can be used in infinite ways – fries, hash browns, baked potatoes, the list goes on.
