Character Deaths That People Will Never Get Over

Across both TV Shows and Movies, there have been many character deaths that have left viewers sad and angry about. Some of these deaths are years old while others are fairly recent. The one thing that these characters’ deaths have in common is that their passings bring tears to our eyes every time they even cross our minds.

For some of these characters, if their shocking death happened during the age of social media, their deaths had everyone talking on social media.

Now, with all of that being said, listed down below are 7 Character Deaths from both TV and Film That People Will Never Get Over:

1. Justin Foley – 13 Reasons Why:

Of all the character deaths from TV and Film featured in this article, Justin Foley’s (Brandon Flynn) death in the final season of 13 Reasons Why is the most recent one to have happened. After passing out during prom, Justin is rushed to the hospital, where a doctor tells Clay and his parents that as a result of his drug use and sex work, he’s contracted HIV-1, which turned into AIDS. Although the doctors did their best to save him, Justin, surrounded by his friends and family, eventually passes away due to a severe brain and lung infection. His death occurred just before he, Clay, and the others were about to graduate from Liberty High.

Justin’s death was devastating for 13 Reasons Why fans as he has come a long way from the show’s first season. Over the show’s four seasons, we watched Justin overcame many obstacles and mature as a person. Also, since 13 Reasons Why aired during the age of social media, Justin Foley’s shocking passing is one of those fictional character deaths that left many fans angry and devastated to the point that it was trending on Twitter.

2. Poussey Washington – Orange Is The New Black:

Poussey was one of the most beloved characters on the Netflix Original Series Orange is The New Black. Her death towards the end of the fourth season left fans both shock and devastated.

As the video below depicts, Poussey died at the hands of a prison guard as a peaceful protest inevitably turned violent. She is pinned down by Officer Bayley, who suffocates her by keeping his knee on her back. Her death was similar in the manner of how Eric Garner and Goerge Floyd were murdered by police officers, not only because of the way they died but also since that all three said: “I can’t breathe” in their final breaths.

3. Fred Weasley – Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows – Part 2:

Another one of the character deaths from movies that fans will never get over is Fred Weasley’s in the franchise’s final film (seventh book (note: the last book was split into two films): Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 2. During the Battle of Hogwarts, Fred is killed by an explosion outside the Room of Requirement, and his death left the Weasley Family, especially his twin brother and best friend, George completely devastated.

Fred Weasley’s passing is one of the most mentioned fictional character deaths that TV and Movie fans wish never happened. Years after both the book and film were released, Harry Potter fans are still upset over Fred’s death to the point that J.K. Rowling, the author of the book series, actually issued an apology on Twitter to fans over killing one of everyone’s favorite twins.

4. John Coffey – The Green Mile:

One of the character deaths that’s in my Top Ten of the ones that happened in films and I won’t get over is John Coffey’s execution during the 1999 Oscar-Nominated film The Green Mile. Ahead of his execution, Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan) asks Prison Officer Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks) to not place the customary hood over his head due to being afraid of the dark (see the video below). It is that part and Coffey’s death by the electric tear that leaves in a pool of tears every time I watch The Green Mile.

5. Mufasa – The Lion King:

Out of all the fictional character deaths featured in this article, chances are pretty good that the death of the character listed as #5 is probably the first one that you can remember. During both the 1994 animated version and the 2019 live-action version, Mufasa’s death (he was murdered by his power-hungry brother Scar) was the one scene in that film that made everyone cry and devastated.

When the live-action version was released last year, many Lion King fans took to Twitter to express how traumatized they were of having to watch Mufasa die all over again.

6. Ellie – Up:

Along with Mufasa, another one of the earliest fictional character deaths that most people remember and probably will never get over as they grow up is Ellie’s in the 2009 animated film Up.

During the first 10 minutes of the film, we see the bond and love between Ellie and her husband Carl from the moment they first met as children. We get to see them grow up together, marry, and grow old together. We also get to see their intense curiosity and a love of exploration, but they keep putting off their dream trip to Paradise Falls.

As they reach old age, Carl finally plans to take her on their dream trip at last, but Ellie gets sick and passes away before they’re able to go. The rest of the film is spent watching Carl, who is inspired by her memory, take their house with balloons and fly it to Paradise Falls.

7. Marley – Marley & Me:

When someone’s dog dies, that person and their family are left grieving over the animal’s death for a long period of time as a result of the number of years of love and joy that the pet brought to its’ owners. Towards the end of Marley & Me, Marley, due to his age and suffering from a near-fatal intestinal disorder, is put to sleep (see the video below).

Marley’s death is one of the most emotional films of all time. Dog lovers have shed many tears while watching this scene of the film.
