It seems as though every celebrity now has a beauty line, with stars taking to Instagram to tout new products every week. With little distinction among the companies, many of us are tired of seeing celebrity skincare and makeup brands barge through our social media feed. However, there are some gems among duds, and not all celebrities simply paste their name on a cosmetic bottle and call it a day. Here are some of our favorite celebrity skincare and makeup brands that are worth trying out.
13-time Grammy Award winner Pharrell Williams founded the skincare line Humanrace after pursuing his own wellness journey. Launched in late 2020, Humanrace’s first product release included the Rice Powder Cleanser, Lotus Enzyme Exfoliator and Humidifying Cream. Now, according to the brand’s Instagram account (@humanrace), Humanrace is gearing up to launch a “Suncare” line on July 14, 2022 that is designed to eliminate white cast.
On Instagram, the Humanrace account shared Pharrell’s mission for starting the company. Unlike other brands, Pharrell stated that Humanrace “doesn’t differentiate by race or gender” and is “creating for humans.” Additionally, on the Humanrace website, the brand maintains that “wellbeing is our most valuable resource” and emphasizes its desire to make wellbeing “accessible to everyone.”
One of the best features of Humanrace is its natural, dermatologist-tested ingredients. According to the Humanrace website, for example, all of its products exclude fragrances and essential oils (ingredients that can cause irritation for those with sensitive skin in particular). Even skincare influencer Hyram rated the brand highly in a Youtube video ranking celebrity skincare brands.
Anyone who follows Halsey understands the “Without Me” singer’s passion for makeup. The founder and CCO of About-Face, Halsey launched her cosmetic brand in early 2021. A few weeks before About-Face released its first products, Halsey expressed on Instagram (@iamhalsey) their experience as an artist, stating they have done their “own makeup for concerts, red carpets, magazine covers, and music videos alike for a long time.” However, Halsey added that “makeup is about feeling cool—not looking perfect.”
That mindset of respecting makeup for the sake of self-expression is reflected in About-Face’s products. From Fractal Glitter Eye Paint to lavender liquid highlighter, there is a certain otherworldly, whimsical quality to Halsey’s brand.
Check out the Paint-It Matte Lip Color here on the About-Face website; it retails for $16 USD.
Everyone knows that Jennifer Lopez has radiant skin. In fact, the triple-threat icon started her skincare brand after years of fans asking how she achieves such a natural glow. According to the JLo Beauty website, Lopez’s flawless skin was inherited from her mother who used olive oil to rejuvenate her own skin. While Lopez notes that “olive oil isn’t always great for the skin,” she wanted to take the ingredient’s moisturizing qualities and combine those with other elements. And thus, the JLo Beauty Olive Complex was born, the defining ingredient of the skincare brand.
More expensive than the other celebrity skincare and makeup brands on this list, JLo Beauty products come in crystal bottles with bronze detailing. One of the most popular products on the site, That Blockbuster Hydrating Cream is meant to reduce wrinkles and fine lines and smooth the skin. It currently sells for $58 USD.
Perhaps the most well-known of all the celebrity skincare and makeup brands on this list, Fenty Beauty launched in 2017 and now boasts over 11.6 million followers on Instagram. According to the Fenty Beauty website, Rihanna grew up in Barbados “transfixed by her mother’s lipstick.” Soon, makeup became the creative outlet Rihanna continues to carry with her today. After years of using various makeup brands, Fenty Beauty notes that Rihanna saw a “void in the industry for products that performed across all skin types and tones.” She soon launched Fenty Beauty to include everyone in the world of makeup, striving to produce a line with a larger variety of skin tone shades.
Some of the best-selling Fenty Beauty products include the Eaze Drop Blurring Skin Tint and the Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer. One of the most popular products on the site, the Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation, comes in 50 shades.
The “Lose You To Love Me” singer launched Rare Beauty in 2020 in order to “redefine what beauty means.” After struggling with mental illness and advocating for the benefits of therapy, Selena Gomez sought to create a beauty brand that allows all individuals to love their own uniqueness. Rare Beauty donates one percent of its annual sales to the Rare Impact Fund, an organization committed to providing mental health resources. The Rare Impact Fund blog includes articles go beyond what is common knowledge and discuss topics such as “How To Share Your Mental Health Story” and “Word Choice In Mental Health.”
One of the brand’s best-sellers is the Soft Pinch Liquid Blush, a product available in eleven shades and matte or dewy finishes.
Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown is more than just a Hawkins Hero. In 2019, the Emmy-nominated actress launched Florence by Mills, naming the brand after her great-grandmother. According to the Florence by Mills site, Brown sees her great-grandmother’s self-acceptance and desire for happiness as inspiration for her brand’s mission. Florence by Mills wants beauty to be without rules or “struggle toward perfection.”
With the brands’ lowercase typeface, fragrance-free ingredients and Gen-Z founder, Florence by Mills targets teens and young adults. Across the brand’s skincare and a makeup lines, some of the best-selling products include the Spot A Spot Acne Patches, Be A VIP Velvet Liquid Lipstick and the Oh Whale! Tinted Lip Balm.
Although not technically a skincare or makeup brand, the tennis legend’s lifestyle company has an SPF Beauty line. According to Williams, she launched EleVen in 2007 to create quality activewear that people could “feel confident in on and off the court.”
The SPF line includes a face lotion, sun serum, body lotion, and three SPF lip balms. The Game Set Match Body Lotion was even crowned the best body SPF in the 2022 Cosmopolitan Holy Grail Beauty Awards.
