Celebrity breakups are always hard to handle. When you have adored a relationship, watched it blossom into something beautiful, then see it all end in tears—it’s painful! Here are twelve celebrity breakups we know you’re not over.
For the twelve years that they were together, “Brangelina” were the most famous couple in Hollywood. With their brood of six gorgeous children who they devoted their lives to, they were seen as the picture-perfect couple. Brad and Angie had been together for a decade before they decided to marry. They had previously said they would not get married until same-sex marriage was legal in all states but relented when their children begged them to have a wedding. When their relationship ended abruptly following an altercation Brad had with one of his sons, the shock rocked the celebrity world.
Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan were beloved for their chemistry, devotion, and energy as a couple. They were often seen out and about looking loved-up and joyful, and Jenna loved to post about her husband on social media. The couple announced their split via Instagram in a heartfelt post about “lovingly separating” and taking different paths in life. The break up was totally unexpected for their legions of fans.
Ian and Nina’s chemistry jumped off the screen when they played the on-and-off couple Damon Salvatore and Elena Gilbert on The Vampire Diaries, so fans were ecstatic when it was revealed that the pair were also dating in real life. Sadly, their steamy and enthralling relationship ended whilst the pair were still playing a couple on screen. Talk about awkward! Thankfully they stayed friends and Nina is now known to hang out with Ian and his wife, Nikki Reed.
“Zanessa” were the heroes of the mid-noughties Disney Channel generation. The pair fell in love whilst playing the most iconic couple in Disney Channel history: Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez from High School Musical. They were together for four years before breaking up around Vanessa’s birthday in 2010. Losing a couple that represented such a huge part of their childhood broke the hearts of their many fans. Vanessa is now with Austin Butler and has been for years, whilst Zac was most recently rumoured to be dating Olympic swimmer, Sarah Bro.
Whilst very few people actually wanted Beca and Jesse to be together (let’s be serious here), Pitch Perfect fans fell in love with the relationship between Jesse’s actor, Skylar Astin, and Anna Camp who played Aubrey. The pair married in an absolutely beautiful ceremony in 2016, but announced their divorce only two years later saying it was “amicable.”
Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth had one of the most high-profile and complicated relationships in Hollywood. They met whilst filming The Last Song in 2009 and became engaged in 2012. They stayed together until 2013 before breaking up during the height of Miley’s infamy. Miley spent the break up dating Patrick Schwarzenegger and a Victoria’s Secret model before she and Liam reconciled again. The pair lost their house in the 2018 California wildfires and married in a private ceremony at Miley’s family home. Less than a year later, in 2019, Miley confirmed they had filed for divorce: the end of a rocky decade-long love story.
Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield were loved by fans for their adorably sweet and always playful relationship. The pair met whilst filming The Amazing Spider-Man, and their interviews during the press for the movie and its sequel were beyond cute. Unfortunately, the pair called off their relationship in 2015 after being in “a dark place.” However, by late 2016, the pair was back on good terms and has been seen together as friends many times since their initial split.
Anna Faris and Chris Pratt seemed like they were the definition of soulmates. Two hilarious characters who just understood each other on a spiritual level. Then, suddenly, out of nowhere, they announced they were divorcing. Even worse, Chris Pratt was engaged to someone else within a year. Despite this, Anna has always been outspoken saying that she supports Chris and was happy for him when she heard about his engagement. They continue to co-parent their son Jack.
This is going back a while, but when Nick and Jessica broke up, it not only broke our hearts, but it also canceled one of the best reality shows MTV had at the time. Popstars Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson dated throughout the ’90s, married in 2002 and divorced in 2005. During their three-year marriage, they starred in their own reality show, Newlyweds, where Jessica infamously asked if tuna was chicken. Looking back at the series now, it is clear these two were never really on the same page.
The most heartbreaking break up on this list; Ariana and Mac met whilst filming the music video for their song, The Way, and became a couple soon after. Ariana credited Mac for his support following the Manchester attack and the pair appeared to have a solid relationship. Eventually, Ariana broke it off stating that she could no longer cope with Mac’s substance abuse. Sadly, months later, Mac died from an overdose. Ariana expressed her deep pain, ended her relationship with Pete Davidson, and wrote a song called “Ghostin’,” which detailed the difficulty she had with Pete when she realised she was still in love with Malcolm after his death.
These two pop icons had a high-profile relationship and were infamous for the time they both showed up on the red carpet wearing full denim outfits. Their break up was particularly hostile with Justin penning “Cry Me a River” about Britney and purposely casting a lookalike of her in the music video—though he still maintains that was not the case. Either way, this was a blow to their fans.
“If you’re a bird, I’m a bird.” Fans of The Notebook were over the moon when the two lead actors revealed that they were in a relationship. When they recreated their famous movie kiss on stage at the MTV Movie Awards, fans went wild. Sadly, they called off their relationship in 2007. Despite that, Ryan said their love story was even more romantic than Noah and Allie’s and was a fantastic time in their lives.
