Hollywood may seem glamorous, but actors and actresses sometimes have to go through extreme physical transformations to fit their roles. These transformations can be both physically and emotionally draining, but the dedication and love for acting these actors and actresses have is evident in all of these cases. Here are 10 celebrities who underwent major transformations for movie roles.
According to Muscle and Fitness, Chris Hemsworth gained 20 pounds for his role as Thor. He achieved his god-like look through a special diet consisting of red meat and protein powder and a workout that became known as the “Christ Hemsworth Workout.”

For the 2004 film “The Machinist,” Christian Bale played a machinist named Trevor Beznik who suffered from insomnia. According to Diethics, Bale lost 63 pounds. To achieve this, Bale ate a low-calorie and high-caffeine diet. Of all of the celebrities who underwent major transformations, this was one of the most dramatic ones.

In an interview with the Independent, Natalie Portman revealed that she lost 20 pounds for her role in “Black Swan.” She ate a diet consisting of carrots and almonds and would work eight straight hours rehearsing for the part. He achieved this transformation through a strict diet and spent two hours a day in the gym. His diet later became known as the “Castaway Diet.”

Zac Efron had to tone his body to little fat and a whole lot of muscle for his role in the 2017 movie, “Baywatch.” To achieve his muscular makeover, he worked out intensely for hours a day, according to E! News. He also ate a diet of whole foods.

For her role as Fantine in “Les Miserables”, Anne Hathaway cut her hair and lost 25 pounds. According to HuffPost, she lost 10 pounds from a strict cleanse and the rest on a low-calorie diet. The goal of the obsessive diet was to make her character look near-death.

For his role as Yossi Ghinsberg in “Jungle,” Daniel Radcliffe had to go on a strict diet to show how his character lost weight due to hunger, infection, and disease. His strict diet lasted a couple weeks, according to Esquire, but Radcliffe says the ability to eat a good meal after the experience was worth it.

For his role of Lou Bloom in the movie, “Nightcrawler”, Jake Gyllenhaal had to lose 30 pounds. According to Page Six, this transformation took place on a diet of chewing gum and kale salad. He also had a vigorous exercise routine, running 15 miles between his home and the set.

For her role as Billie Jean King, Emma Stone’s goal was to become more muscular. This, according to E! News, was accomplished by rigorous exercise and protein shakes. She was super-focused on her nutrition through the filming of the movie.
