How To Create A Great Capsule Wardrobe For Work

A capsule wardrobe can be quite a convenient way of keeping your wardrobe organized, for those who can master the art. The purpose of a capsule wardrobe is to have the key pieces required and mix and match appropriately throughout the days to have different outfits, but without the bulk overflowing in your closet. It can be hard to minimalize your wardrobe, but starting with work attire can be a great way to ease into this way of living. And yes, it is a way of life. Here are some ways you can create the perfect capsule wardrobe for work.

Tops

While assessing what kind of tops to keep in your capsule wardrobe, it is important to keep in mind the shirts that will work best on their own and underneath a blazer. Have two button up shirts handy, one in white and one in blue. Two undershirts will be needed as well to have underneath the button up tops.

For other dressy shirts, have one long sleeve top, and one sleeveless. Having button ups are important, but it is also equally so to have some shirts to spice up your looks from day to day. This is a classic part of the capsule wardrobe for work.

Bottoms

For bottoms, a solid number for trousers would be three to five. A few narrow legged trousers in different colors, perhaps a black and a navy, and a couple of wide legged trousers in black for those as well and perhaps a tan or khaki color.

For warmer days, or when you are not in the mood for pants (we all feel that way sometimes) have two or three skirts available. One or two in a basic color like black and another in red or taupe. Have one more in a subtle pattern with teal or crimson red.

Dresses and Intimates

Dresses are a great way to change it up if you are tired of the same old trousers. Have two or three dresses with the same color code, two in neutral and one in a power color. This simple formula should keep you on track while putting together your capsule wardrobe.

Intimates are one of the most important components to consider, even if no one will see them. The right intimates for your clothes will affect an outfit tremendously and having a pair of nude tights is a must. Having one or two extra pairs are important as well as having undergarments that ensure a smooth look with no VPL (visible panty lines). This is a great outfit for your capsule wardrobe for work.

Accessories

Having the appropriate accessories can be tricky, as you don’t want to have anything too loud or inappropriate. Have one or two handbags that are, again, neutral colors like brown and black that will go with anything in your closet and are big enough to carry your work needs.

Have a few statement pieces of jewelry that aren’t too crazy, like a subtle necklace and a few bracelets. In addition, have two belts handy in black and dark brown to keep everything in place.

Jackets, Coats and Blazers

For coats and jackets, one of each would work just fine. The purpose of capsule wardrobe is to prevent bulk, and an excess of outerwear would be a bit counterintuitive. Have a classic rain coat in brown or black and have a light jacket in a neutral color, or maybe a red, if you are feeling bold.

Have two to three blazers in neutral colors. One in black, one in light brown or tan, and one in a color you feel will bring a look together. This is one of the best tops for a capsule wardrobe for work.

Shoes

For the shoes, some of us may have a few problems sticking with just one or two. If you can, having one pair of black heels and one pair of nude or taupe heels will do the trick. If you prefer, add one or two extra that are a lower heel or higher heel, depending on the hem length in your outfit.

For flats, the similar rules apply. Have a pair of black flats, oxfords perhaps, and a pair or bright flats like maroon. You could go with a nude for the flats as well if that is a color scheme you prefer. This is one of the best pairs of pumps for a capsule wardrobe for work.
