The town of Ipswich MA may not be widely known, but it is well known. When it comes to seafood, specifically fried clams and lobster rolls, you’ve probably heard of Ipswich, or at least the Ipswich Shellfish Co. If not, then you may want to climb out from under the rock you’ve been living under. Aside from the seafood, Ipswich has some other great food places you should probably visit.
Ok, maybe I’m a little bias with this one considering I used to work here, but come on, you can’t visit the town of Ipswich MA without stopping at Zumi’s. If you like coffee, and I don’t mean Dunks or Starbucks, I’m talking good coffee, then Zumi’s is an absolute must. You’ll never want any other coffee after having a cup of theirs. They brew fair trade certified organic coffee beans from light roasts to dark, as well as delicious latte specialties. Really, there’s a drink for everyone here. All you people with a sweet tooth have to try the Caramel Cloud Latte.
If you’re not a coffee enthusiast, it’s still worth a visit. Umesh, the owner, and his brother, Babesh, have great personalities. If you’re looking for the heart and soul of the town of Ipswich, or a good laugh, Zumi’s is the place to be.
As a self-proclaimed pizza snob, this is another absolute must. Riverview Pizza has been my favorite pizza for as long as I can remember. I always get Olde Way, as I believe having the cheese underneath the sauce really showcases the flavoring. See if you can guess their secret ingredient. It makes the sauce. Whenever I meet someone who has yet to visit Riverview, I make it my mission to change that. Whether I take them myself, because let’s be honest, I’ll jump at any chance to go, or just pester them until they go themselves, I will get them there.
I have never had a bad meal here, and I have been here A LOT. From their steak tips to their seafood, there’s a great variety of delicious plates for even the pickiest of eaters. Though there are other restaurants in the town of Ipswich that are seafood specific, the Choate arguably has the best fried clams in town.
Taco Tuesday anyone? En Fuego has the best taco’s, with a great Taco Tuesday deal to boot. You can get two tacos and a margarita for just $12. If you order guac, they make it FRESH right in front of you. Can it get any better than that?
The Heart & Soul Cafe is located, you guessed it, in the heart of the town of Ipswich. On the corner of central street, across from Choate Bridge Pub, you’ll find this little cafe that is perfect for brunch. Seriously, that avocado toast is amazing. They also have the coolest yellow bus you’re bound to see somewhere around town.
They have the best sandwiches here. The BEST. When I worked at Zumi’s, I would walk down to the Green Grocer on my lunch break just to get a sandwich. It’s not a long walk, so it’s beyond worth it. As amazing as all of their sandwiches are, I can’t help but get the same thing every time I go there now; the avocado sandwich on whole grain bread. Now you’re probably wondering why I’m claiming they have the best sandwiches plural when I say I always get the same thing. I have branched out at times and gotten other sandwiches. They were great, I just can’t help but get the avocado whenever I can. They also have quite the assortment of cheeses that you really should venture out and try. As much as I love cheese, they have some I had never even heard of before!
The Clam Box is one of the most well known restaurants in the town of Ipswich, and for good reason. Having been featured in numerous magazines on TV shows, such as Channel 5’s Chronicle, The Food Network and Phantom Gourmet, to name a few, they have made quite a name for themselves regarding their fried clams. If you’ve been to Ipswich and for some reason you haven’t been to the Clam Box, you should consider reevaluating your priorities. Oh, and did I mention it’s shaped like a clam box?
You can’t go wrong with any dish, or drink, when you go to the Hart House. Everything from the bread they give you when you are seated, to their desserts and their generously potent drinks are going to leave you more than satisfied.
Two words. Homemade. Ice Cream. Ok, technically three words, but technicalities aside, ice cream is amazing, but White Farms is on a whole other level. oh and did I mention they have a mini golf course? Emphasis on the mini, but still.
Now, this may not be unique just to Ipswich, but I have to mention it. My grandparents brought the Dairy Queen to the town of Ipswich back in 1961, so really, you can thank me for this one. Who doesn’t love a classic Dairy Queen treat, especially that new Dipped Strawberry Blizzard?
