Summer is not the only season full of trips out of town. Camping can be a great low-key trip with a big group of friends or it can be a cozy couple adventure. No matter who you choose to travel with, there are a few key elements to be aware of. Here are some camping essentials to bring on your fall weekend getaway.
Let’s start with the obvious answer! Whether you burn easily or not, the sun has a way of creeping up on you when camping. If you spend a lot of time in the water, out on the boat, or even sitting in a camping chair at the site, those rays are going to be shining on you. I prefer sunscreen in the form of a spray because it goes on quickly and stays on without all the extra rubbing in. A few quick sprays and you will be good to go!
Maybe you packed one sleeping bag for each person, but those camping nights can get pretty chilly! It’s best to pack extra sleeping bags or blankets in case your tent is not made of the thickest material. Even though you’re on a weekend getaway, that’s no reason to freeze in the woods. A rule of thumb is that you would rather be over-prepared than unprepared.
Whether you are in a heavily populated wildlife area or not, nothing is worse than waking up to your planned breakfast all over the ground thanks to a wild animal. Consider a trip to the Container Store before you head out camping that way your snacks will be protected.
You may the best swimmer in the entire camping group but that is no excuse to skip packing life jackets. Sometimes you have others who aren’t as confident in their swimming skills or you just want to spend a lazy day floating in the water and these situations should be considered. Next to your swimsuit and inner tube, life jackets are definite camping essentials.
If you’re going camping, chances are you want to get away from all the technological gadgets. Take this as an opportunity to catch up on those books coated in dust on your shelf or write about the beauty unfolding around you. Sure, we all want those camping photos to post later but take advantage of the fresh air and unplug!
A weekend getaway often brings about images of cute outfits and matching sandals. Feel free to pack those sandals if you pair some comfy shoes along with them. Camping requires a lot of walking whether you decide to go hiking or you’re just setting up tents along the campsite. Your feet will thank you once your getaway is over!
In the form of spray or candles, there are many alternatives to keep those pesky bugs away from your skin! If you’re short on time, consider purchasing some bug spray at your local drugstore or take the time to make your own version at home before your trip. I’ve yet to meet a person who enjoys bug bites so be sure to take the necessary precautions on your camping trip!
Is it really camping if you don’t have a s’more? One of the simplest “meals” to prepare and a group activity, you are going to make sure your supplies are packed. Gathering around a campfire with your closest friends or your significant other is made that much sweeter with melted marshmallows on a stick. This is one of the most important camping essentials.
