Starting school in downtown Toronto initially gave me the idea that I had to spend heaps of money to have a good time. Boy, was I wrong. After blowing my money on tuition, textbooks, rent, and food, I learned that the best ways to have fun in Toronto are free (or very cheap). Keep reading for 10 fun things to do when you’re broke AF at Ryerson University!
1. Check out what’s going on at Yonge and Dundas.
There’s always something going on there. Special events, movie screenings, concerts—you name it. Even if it’s just checking out the street performers or unsettling religious preachers, you can always find some sort of amusement just steps away from campus.

2. Catch ‘em all on Pokemon Go!
Check out all the lures around the area. Be prepared to come across a bunch of Drowzees, too.
3. Try out geocaching.
You can go treasure hunting right on campus. You’ll need a data plan and the Geocaching app on your phone. It’s a challenge when you first start out, but it’s a great tangible alternative to Pokemon Go if you’re not into the whole Pokemon scene.

4. See a free concert at the Canadian Opera Company.
Choose from a selection of jazz, vocal, piano, world music, or chamber music series. You can look at the calendar of events on the organization’s website.

5. Host a photo shoot session with your friends at Nathan Phillips Square.
A true Torontonian can never have enough selfies and candid shots featuring the Toronto sign, right?
6. Go on a tour with the Tour Guys.
There are four tours with the Tour Guys that you can choose from—all free of charge.
7. Snakes and Lattes
Round up a group of friends and head to Snakes and Lattes, a board game café. Admission is $5, and you get access to an entire library of board games! Board games are perfect for when you’re both bored and broke AF at Ryerson University!

8. Hang out at Allen Gardens Conservatory.
This century-old greenhouse is open all year long and has the most interesting plants. It’s definitely worth checking out!
9. Go exploring around downtown Toronto!
Wander through the PATH and see where it takes you. Check out city hall and other buildings during doors open days. Go people-watching on the subway. Use your imagination to find interesting things to do.
10. Go window shopping.
When you’ve exhausted all your options, you can always window shop at the Eaton Center. It might cause you pain knowing that you can’t afford to buy anything, but you can start planning for all those shopping sprees you’ll be going on in the future when you’re rich!
