1. Decrease/increase in appetite.

If you notice a change in food consumption patterns (eating too much or eating too little over an extended period of time), that can raise some concern.

2. Lack of desire to socialize.

If you are quite social and are involved in a lot of activities, but suddenly you are reluctant to go to social gatherings and other extracurricular activities, you may want to evaluate the source of such disinterest.

3. Lack of focus.

If you are struggling to focus on your studies , possess an inability to retain information or can’t perform simple tasks you may be depressed. If you also notice you are missing work, appointments and other important meetings that is also a cause of concern.

4. Negative thoughts

Everyone has negative thoughts from time to time. But if those thoughts turn into self loathing and subsequently affect your ability to perform daily functions that is a source of concern. These include thoughts of failure, suicide, unworthiness etc.

5. Sleeping too little or too much.

Have you been suffering from inability to sleep? Or you spend extended period of times sleeping? Once in a while changes in sleep patterns is normal. However, if this is a repeated occurrence there may be an underlying issue.

At York University, there are various resources to assist in student’s mental health. There is Mental Health Disability Services which provides personal counselling and other services. There is the group called Women Mental Health Talks where females meet to discuss any underlying issues that they may have. If you need to take time off school, because you are overwhelmed, that’s okay. Always communicate your feelings to a close confidant or family member. Stay strong and be positive.
