The Ultimate UBC Bucket List

UBC is known for being a city within a city. With so much going on, you won’t need to use Pokémon Go as your excuse to go outside. Although there is much to do in Vancouver, it’s easy to forget that anything exists outside of UBC’s campus due to its large size and the vast amount of ways to spend your time. If you need an idea, here are 23! Keep reading for the ultimate UBC bucket list!

1. Attend the annual AMS First Week.

Before schoolwork takes a toll on you, go to the two-week orientation for students. Some of the events are paint and pool parties. Among these is the Welcome Back BBQ with music and food. 2015 performers were Cashmere Cat, Dragonette, the Zolas, Dirty Radio, and Glory Days.

2. Go to clothing-optional Wreck Beach nude and spend the day enjoying the breeze.

Go skinny dipping if you can brave the cold waters.

3. See the sunset at Wreck Beach and make a bonfire.

Watch the sky light up in orange and pink and spend the night if you dare.

4. Go to Pit night on Wednesdays after pre-gaming at Mahony and Sons.

The best way to get over Hump Day blues is buying a drink, or five, at the Pit Pub and unwinding on the dance floor. Past themes were DJ Khaled and St. Patrick’s Day edition.

5. Go to Koerner’s Pub.

When the Pit line is too long, visit the alternative and sing karaoke or listen to the live performances.

6. Eat at the 24 hour McDonald’s.

No matter where your day takes you, midnight or 5am, you will always end your night here.

7. Go to a themed frat.

After just one, you’ll probably realize you never want to go back, and count down the days till legality.

8. Upon turning 19, immediately head to BC Liquor.

Forget all obligations for the weekend.

9. Find shows and movies being filmed on campus and spend the day stalking the actors.

Jamie Dornan, I tried.

10. Attend a concert at Doug Mitchell arena.

The 1975, Death Cab for Cutie, and Metric performed in the spring with Chance the Rapper coming in the fall.

11. Participate in Storm the Wall.

A tradition going 38 years strong, compete in a series of races and conquer a 12 foot wall at the finish line. Join a team or be an Iron Person and do it solo.

12. Attend Recreation Free Week.

Prevent the dreaded Freshman 15 and take free classes every second week of each semester. Past classes held were: Flash Mob, Ju Jutsu, K-Pop Dance, and Burlesque.

13. Put Domino’s Pizza on speed dial and get on a first name basis with the employees.

If you’re going to gain weight in university, you might as well do it with honor and order extra cheese and toppings.

14. Participate in the annual Undie Run.

An event benefiting charity, this bare run is your excuse to show off the Calvin Klein and Victoria’s Secret sets that you spent more on than you care to admit.

15. Graffiti the E and take photos if you can climb to the top.

The famous cairn pays tribute to the Engineering faculty and is generally unrecognizable as it’s repainted weekly.

Learn more about the Pacific Northwest and go museum hopping. Admission is free for students.

17. Explore Pacific Spirit Regional Park.

Take a jog or pictures in the forest that separates UBC from the Pacific Ocean.

18. Up your Instagram game with photos of campus scenery, especially in the fall.

UBC is know for its photogenic campus. Take photos of the mountains, the ocean, and everything in between.

19. Pull an all-nighter at Irving K Barber library.

As your soul is drained during finals week, come prepared with Monster Energy drinks and caffeine, and preferably a blanket.

20. Go through the ropes course at the Botanical Garden.

The GreenHeart TreeWalk is composed of tree platforms, zip-lines, and high ropes courses suspended above the forest floor, giving visitors bird’s eye views of the forest.

21. Go to AMS block party on the last day of school.

Every year, on the last day of school, the Block Party commemorates the end of the school year with booze and bands. 2016’s headliners were Vince Staples and Oh Wonder. Fight your way to the front, and mosh, even in the mellow sets.

22. Befriend and party with the Irish who migrate to Vancouver every summer.

We don’t know what it is but once the weather gets warm, Vancouver attracts flocks of European expats.

23. Know how lucky you are to be a Thunderbird.
