Some things are inevitable in college. Specifically, here are ten things that will happen to you at University of Waterloo – 100 percent. So, get ready.
You either go to class on time and tired or risk the shade your professor will throw at you for walking in 20 minutes late into class; ice capp and honey cruller in hand. But hey, at least you’ll be nourished and present during your three hour lecture. Either way, every student can relate to the inner battle they have with themselves in line at Tim Hortons behind 30 people, 5 minutes before class.
It’s a lot. The tests, the assignments, the essays you have to complete. This too, all while making sure you feed yourself, do your laundry without shrinking anything, maintain a social life, and occasionally bathe yourself in between. It’s no surprise that a few breakdowns are in order during these essential life experiences. Just know, you’re never alone! Seek help when you need it.
Being taken seriously as an Arts student is a life long mission all UW Psych, English, and all other relevant majors can attest to. Whether its everyone’s inability to comprehend what they do with ‘all that spare time’ or ‘how many different colours they incorporate in their outfit’, one things for sure – it’s hella annoying. Let’s not forget the socially awkward hermit stereotypes all engineering students have to break through when trying to have a conversation with someone. Why can’t we all just get along?
We’ve all had that moment where you go to write your professor’s name on your final exam booklet – and you draw a blank. After the time you’ve spent together over the past couple of months, you would think you would have the slightest idea on what this walking textbook’s name was. And then you remember the last time you went to class was during syllabus week so- that makes sense.
If you’ve never been to been to Bomber Wednesdays, do you even go to Waterloo? It may be overhyped, heck it may even be a little unhygenic, but Bomber Wednesdays are a mid week tradition every UW student will live and breathe during their time here. However, just know; Thursday mornings will be a little rough. But you’ll figure that out trying to make it through your 10 am mandatory attendance class.
Whether its a credit card company, or off campus housing – everyone wants to talk to you when you’re walking through Vendors Alley at SLC. And frankly, you don’t have time for it! You’ll either be on your way to class, or you haven’t reached the level of adulthood needed to own a credit card. But don’t worry, mastering the art of avoiding eye contact is a skill even the adult-i-est of adults can’t reach.
Take those warning signs seriously! The university takes well intended precautions to block off geese nests around campus in order to ensure you do not cross paths with these geese during mating season. Or they will attack you. Luckily, there are plenty of apps to help reroute you to your destination safe and sound.
Ah, the inevitable friendship at first sight. You share a few giggles, stress about the class outline together, and then part ways. Why? Either you stop going to class, or they do. Besides, the other 700 people in your lecture make it slightly difficult to find them again. It just wasn’t meant to be.
It’s bad enough you’ve only had 2 hours of sleep. Now you’re in a gymnasium with 900 other sleep deprived students and well, despite the body heat – it’s cold! It’s a big gym. Daunting, almost. And the only calories lost at this gym is through the increase in heart rate that takes place trying to figure out the answers to your exam booklet.
Yes, they may be long. And you may not even remember all of it. But just know, that the University of Waterloo will provide for some great memories for you when you’re old and successful. The good, the bad, and the ugly. That- we’ll promise you.
