One thing I learned as a second year university student is that, there is no “key to success” or magical way of achieving what you desire in life, especially success in school. However, it’s important to seek tips or advice when you need it the most, so that you can be the best version of yourself throughout your endeavors. The important thing to remember is that you are in control of your life, and you choose to make the best of it. School is a place to have fun, make friends, and learn- a lot- which is something that benefits you in your future. So here are some tips on how to be successful in college- and how to enjoy yourself in order to have success.
When you have an overwhelming schedule, it can get in the way of you succeeding in all of your classes. It is very important to choose the courses you have to take, and plan out your credits so that you are on track and you know what to take. When you have a schedule where you have way too many classes and not enough time to study and keep up with your classes- you can end up getting overworked and that results in not doing the best of your ability in your courses. Don’t ever be pressured to do take extra courses or take that course you don’t need. Go at your own pace and slowly but surely, you will succeed in all of your courses that you are scheduled in.
Having an organized routine that is easy to follow will also keep you on track. Keeping an agenda is the best idea, so that you can record your daily activities for each day and know them in advance. This helps you follow your school schedule and keep track of your classes, in order to balance them amongst your other daily activities.
I think this is the most important point on this list, due to the fact that I’ve seen and experienced giving up, more so with other things other than school. Giving up is when you are tired of trying, tired of working at something, and tired of trying to understand or experience something anymore. Giving up is a sign of weakness, it is something that you do when you have literally tried everything and you see that nothing works. I have given up on many things in my life, personally, I have realized over the years that I just simply get bored with something, or if I am not getting what I need out of it (if it is wasting my time, hurting me, etc…), I simply walk away. I have done this with friendships, relationships, even hobbies- but thankfully, I kept school on my radar. I know it can be very tough sometimes, I personally have had some mental breakdowns and anxiety that keeps me from working at school. But at the end of the day, I always return to it because I never get bored and I know I will always get something out of it… and I’ve learned how to overcome the obstacles and move on from them, in order to help myself keep something that will help me in my future.
In college, you begin to figure yourself out. I didn’t know who I was, and I didn’t understand myself or my needs until my first year of college. I think in order to be successful you must know yourself, or at least have a sense of who you are. When you understand your wants, your needs, your likes, and your dislikes, you get an idea of who you want to become, what you want to do, and how you want to do it. For example, if you love art, and you want to go into that field, then you pick something artistic that interests you and you follow it. You work hard but you also enjoy it, and then you will find opportunities that interest you after you get your degree.
Have fun with everything you do, especially if you are a student. If you don’t enjoy your time or love what you do, then how can you succeed in it? Once you learn to enjoy your classes and time at school, you learn how to do that with a future job. Learn how to balance out your classes and social life, so that you can get to know people and make friends, and memories. Make the best of it, and that’s what will lead you to success. I promise that someday, when you get that degree in your hand- you will then think to yourself, “wow, it was worth it to stay up those long nights” and “wow, those early morning classes were easy to tackle”. It gets better and easier as you go along, so enjoy your time while your still young and learning things… make memories, be content with yourself, and succeed!
