Considering the era that we live in, there is never a shortage of video games to discover and play. Realizing this fact, you ought to do yourself a favor and enjoy as many of these titles as possible can. And when I say this, I don’t necessarily simply mean current generation video games, I am referring to all possible video games throughout history. So, the only question left is, where to begin?
Well, since a remake was just announced for this year, I believe this would be the wisest place to commence. Seriously though, you would be doing yourself a true disservice if you let this classic slip by you. That said, Link’s Awakening is an action-adventure video game developed by Nintendo (obviously) for the Game Boy (kids these days probably don’t even know what those are).
The game was a truly critical and commercial success. Besides, I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, this title basically paved the way for all future handheld action-adventure video games. (Get yourself to your nearest garage sale and buy a Game Boy, what are you waiting for?)
Not to be confused with the newly released remake of Resident Evil 2, this survival horror masterpiece was developed and published by Capcom. And, although originally released for the Nintendo Gamecube, you can basically find this video game on (nearly) every console since then. Yes, it’s that great. It has garnered critical acclaim, with outstanding focus on narrative, gameplay, voice acting, and characters. (Basically, all the needed ingredients to make a fantastic game.)
In brief, players take control of government special agent Leon S. Kennedy (from Resident Evil 2) in order to rescue the U.S. president’s daughter, who has been kidnapped by a cult in rural Spain. Sounds exciting, doesn’t it?
With all the praise that the sequel received, it is only fitting that you spoil yourself a little and play this prequel, which is actually a sequel. (Confused yet?) Anywho, as you more than likely already realized, Red Dead Redemption is a Western action-adventure game developed by the kings of gaming; Rockstar.
Without getting into any real spoilers, this title picks off right where Red Dead Redemption 2 ended. So, in other words, if you have completed RDR 2, you surely want to witness what follows in what can be stated as one of the best narratives in video game history. (The character below might seem awfully familiar.)
Although originally released for the PlayStation 3, you can now experience this fantastic journey of a game, developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony, on your PlayStation 4 as well. Again, not to get into any spoilers, but this game occurs two years after the prequel (Drake’s Fortune) and once again follows lovable protagonist Nathan Drake as he attempts to unravel a rather intriguing mystery concerning Venetian explorer Marco Polo and his undocumented expedition from China.
In true Naughty Dog fashion, this game is littered with extraordinary characters, humour, narrative, music, as well as everything else that makes an incredible video game.
Do I even really need to elaborate as to how awesome of a game this is? I mean, seriously, just by witnessing Rockstar’s astounding track record, you know this game is a gem just waiting to be re-visited. And yes, of course, it received extensive critical acclaim.
Concisely, set within the fictional Vice City (basically Miami), the game follows fan-favorite Tommy Vercetti ensuing his release from prison (charming, I know). After being placed right in the middle of an ambushed drug deal, Tommy searches for those accountable while, in the meantime, establishing a criminal empire and, likewise, seizing power from other city-wide criminal organizations.
Bonus: This game is also recognized for its splendid 80s soundtrack.
