I don’t know about y’all, but I capital N Need an agenda to get me through the day. As a university student, it is so important to stay on top of all my assignments and plan out my semester. But also! Agendas are a necessity for just about anything I want to do – hanging out, working, volunteering, et cetera, et cetera! And on top of all o’ that, I am someone who has always wanted to keep up a diary or journal. If you’re like me, lemme tell you, bullet journalling is the way to go! It’s not just a buzz worthy trend that only super bloggers or insta influencers can have, it’s a way of life that combines every aspect of journalling you could want! So, let me tell you MY bullet journalling story, and why it is DEFINITELY for you!
So. All throughout high school and up until my second year of university, I’ve been using an agenda. However, something just wasn’t quite right. I dreamed of having somewhere I could put all my lists, ideas, notes and anecdotes; somewhere to compile each and every one of my scattered thoughts. Why couldn’t I have the best of both worlds? No journal was there for ALL my needs…that I knew of yet. A friend of mine, a self described organizational freak, was a bullet journalling queen. But what was bullet journalling? This was 2017, and although bulleting had been around for a while, it seemed like a social media trend I couldn’t get behind. And yet, I wanted something more personal, more me! Not just some calendars and weekly spreads, but a place where I could put all my thoughts together. But how?
Finally, one day, I snapped. The fall semester of school was coming to a close, and I was looking for something more than your average agenda. After talking with my bulletin BFF again, I decided – it was time to take the leap. So for Christmas, what do you think was under that tree? My brand new bullet journal, and an official Bullet Journal trademarked journal at that! I really wanted to see if it was going to be just as my friend had described it; “bulleting can be anything you want it to be! You can do anything!” What exactly did that mean?
At first, starting to bullet journal was suuuuuuuper overwhelming. You can look up “How To Start Your Bullet Journal” online and So. Many. Ideas. Come. Up. After sifting through a lot of info I decided to create a ‘Year in Advance’ calendar, a monthly calendar with a page for monthly tasks and goals, a mood/habits chart, and a page devoted to writing down what I did every day that month – in addition to creating a weekly planner. Setting everything up the first time took forever, and I couldn’t help but think, “is this worth it?” But oh my god, is it ever!
…And here’s why! With a bullet journal, you can truly do anything you want. The fact that you can design exactly how you want your agenda to look, and what elements you want to add, was a huge break through for me! You can add in pages just to write on, make lists on, take notes on, whatever! And all in the middle of your regular agenda. Usually, an agenda has a set format, as we all know, but not this one. A bullet journal is seriously there for you!
What I first thought would take up too much time, is now a relaxing activity I get to do everyday. Filling out my habit/mood trackers, writing down what I do every day and crossing tasks off my lists the best way to reflect. At the end of each month, I relish in planning out the next month’s few pages of planning. Bullet journalling is a refreshing and exciting routine to add into your life. Craving creativity AND structure? Ya just found it!
